Music: Postmodern jazz with vocals as Mélange À Trois play Thurs., June 29

The jazz trio Mélange À Trois play Best Video Performance Space on Thursday, June 29. The show begins at 8 PM and there is a $5 cover.

Mélange À Trois is a brand spankin’ new trio that takes a Po-Mo approach to Jazz Standards, TV theme songs and classic commercials. With MÀT you never know if, in the middle of “All of Me,” you’re going to crash into a Sondheim reference, an unrelated waltz, two seconds of a barrelhouse blues, a squeak-fart modernist touch, a soundtrack moment—even a moment of contemplation.

Cristina Harris is fabulous singer-songwriter who is well known in town for her intense, personal and thoughtful songs about real life shit that peeps tend to get a little squeegee about sometimes.

Mark Kuss has played with Branford Marsalis, Nnenna Freelon, Michiel Borstslap and a bunch of other pretty well known “cats.” He’s CEO of unison-design, a music software company.

Jesse Raccio is a composer, thinker, software designer, traveller and, oh, a snap-ass bass player. He’s a “playa” at the Grove—a hothouse startup engine in New Haven—and CTO of unison-design.

Music: Noah and David Chevan Duo play Wed., June 28

Jazz bassist David Chevan and his son Noah play Best Video Performance Space on Wednesday, June 28. The show starts at 8 PM and the cover is $5.

Noah and David Chevan have played music together for well over 20 years, but this concert at Best Video is their first duo performance. For this concert, they will be playing improvisations that grow out of Noah’s recent work developed in the T.I.M.A.R.A. (technology in music and related arts) program at Oberlin Conservatory, Noah on trumpet and David on bass.

Simultaneously, Noah will record and electronically manipulate and reshape those sounds adding color, texture, and shape to the duo improvisations. The sonic results of these manipulations create new musical landscapes that are wildly unlike any of the jazz that David is known for or the punk that Noah has played. What will happen on June 28 will be as much a surprise and delight for the artists as it will be for the audience.

David Chevan is a rare individual in the music world. An active bassist and composer, he is involved in some of the most dynamic and musically exciting jazz projects in Southern Connecticut. In addition to his busy performance schedule, Chevan also holds a Ph.D. in jazz history and is a full-time professor of music at Southern Connecticut State University.

Chevan’s artistic career has continued to blossom. He leads two of his own ensembles, BASSOLOGY and THE AFRO-SEMITIC EXPERIENCE, performs in two critically acclaimed duos, and is a free-lance bassist in the New Haven area.

Music: String quartet rock by The Tet Offensive Fri., June 23, S.G. Carlson opens

String quartet rockers The Tet Offensive, led by Brian Robinson, return to Best Video Performance Space on Friday, June 23. Indie singer-songwriter S.G. Carlson opens the show with a solo set. The music starts at 8 PM and there is a $5 cover.

The Tet Offensive.

The Tet Offensive are a string quartet-powered rock band led by singer and composer Brian Robinson. Formed in New York City, the Tet Offensive played to audiences at CBGBs and the Knitting Factory covering bands as wide-ranging as Nirvana and the Bee Gees. Now based in New Haven, CT, the Tet Offensive has become a formidable ensemble, performing original songs deeply influenced by bands like the White Stripes, Radiohead and Led Zeppelin. It’s the Tet Offensive’s mission to show that traditionally “classical” instruments have just as much bite and visceral energy as the standard rock quartet.

New Haven Connecticut’s Sam Carlson writes with an acerbic punch. With incisive and often satirical lyrics he explores a fascination with the mundane, good and bad uses of time, and a fist full of bummers. He has worked in different capacities with a variety of bands including but not limited to: Ports of Spain, Laundry Day, The Proud Flesh, 10K Blades, Rob Carlson and Benefit Street, and Winter White.

The Anne Marie Menta Band plays Best Video Performance Space on Thursday, June 22, with The Chris Childs Trio opening. The show has an early 7:30 start and the cover is $7.

Anne Marie Menta hails from New Haven, CT., where she has been a long time favorite singer/songwriter. She comes from a family of three brothers, where playing and listening to music was their great passion. Her musical credits include fronting various rock & roll, folk, and country bands as a singer/guitarist, including The Wanderers, Sugar Moon, Sky Riders, and Rodeo Radio. In the mid 90s, she decided to concentrate on her own original music, and those tunes of hers that she “snuck” into her cover band repertoire now became her main focus. But, the country, folk, and pop music that she loved continued to be an influence in her writing.

Anne Marie’s first two CDs of original music, “Untried & True” and “When the Love Ran Deep” were released in 1999 and 2004 to enthusiastic reviews and gained airplay throughout New England acoustic music programs. Her third CD, “Seven Secrets,” was released in late November 2009 and continues her lyrical and melodic style of songwriting, as well as collaborations with her producer and fellow songwriter and instrumentalist, Dick Neal. She has been a featured performer at the Eli Whitney Folk Festival in New Haven, CT. and opened for artists such as Richard Shindell, The Kennedys, and Eddie from Ohio. She was a finalist in the 2004 South Florida Folk Festival Singer/Songwriter competition, and a showcase artist at NERFA (New England Regional Folk Alliance.)

The Chris Childs Trio.

Atlanta performer/composer Chris Childs is utilizing this trio for cello, english horn, and piano, to present his new work titled “If I Were a Little Boy, I’d Be a Girl.” This 25 minute, single-movement piece started as an experiment with two particular goals in mind: 1) to concentrate on the more lyrical aspects of each instrument, especially the cello and english horn. Throughout the piece the piano often serves as an out-of-focus accompaniment for the other two instruments, though the piano does indeed have its own featured moments; and 2) to create a work that unfolds a tapestry of musical scenes while retaining a thematic cohesion from beginning to end.

The music was written with a sense of fascination with how thematic source material can be altered and re-used gently, subtly, and sometimes subliminally to create a sense of connectivity throughout, reshaping the idea of a linear musical experience into something that operates more like a 3-dimensional tonal landscape.

The Chris Childs Trio consists of Carolyn Johnston (english horn), Ben Shirley (cello), and Chris Childs (piano). Both Ben and Chris are members of the Atlanta based group, Faun and a Pan Flute, and Carolyn Johnston is an active musician in Atlanta’s classical music scene. It is the aim of the Chris Childs Trio to manifest an embracing and inclusive attitude, ever attempting to bridge the gap between the historically academic world of “classical” instrumental music and the world of DIY, “folk”, and community based music scenes.

Progressive folk group Fe Fi Fo and singer-songwriter Krizta Moon play Best Video Performance Space on Thursday, June 21. The show starts at 8 PM and the cover is $5.

The Fe Fi Fo acoustic quartet takes you on colorful tonal and lyrical adventures. Fe Fi Fo plays mostly original music however often includes cover material from artists like Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Captain Beefheart and even some Frank Zappa.

The lyrical content examines life from a myriad of perspectives and is socio-political and often cathartic, and the passionate vocal delivery of Jon White certainly helps get that message across. Guitarist Ronnie Neuhauser delves into a number of alternate tunings of his own devising bringing interesting tonal colors to the music. Ronnie Neuhauser and Fred Melillo (bass) also insert some very technical instrumentals into the mix, accompanied by percussionist James Moss. Fe Fi Fo is definitely not your average acoustic trio. Krizta Moon is a board certified music therapist and 2001 graduate of SUNY New Paltz. She is a member of the American Music Therapy Association with 20 years experience as a professional performer. She specializes in vocal training, deep resonate breathing and vocal toning.

Krizta has a bachelor’s degree of science in music therapy with a concentration in jazz vocal performance and 8 years of private classical voice training which concluded with a year at the The Hartt School Of Music Conservatory in 1996. She has taught voice both privately and for the Warner Theatre’s Arts and Education Center of Torrington CT and Downright Art & Music of Collinsville CT. She has written, performed and produced several original recordings as part of her own reflective personal music therapy journey over the last decade with the newest release in the spring of 2015 titled “Tending The Garden of Truth.”

She has created several music therapy community programs and workshops in Litchfield, Hartford and New Haven Counties and has entertained audiences throughout New England at an array of venues; wellness centers, festivals and fundraisers.

Prof. Mark Schenker returns for new lecture series starting Sun., July 9; “How to Read a Film” subject is films of Howard Hawks

In this fifth installment of his series “How to Read A Film,” Mark Schenker of Yale College presents four lectures on “The Films of Howard Hawks.” All four lectures will be held on consecutive Sunday afternoons at 2 PM, starting on Sunday, July 9. Admission to each lecture is $7.

Hawks’ filmography spans the decades—from “The Road to Glory” (1926) through “Rio Lobo” (1970)—and spans genres, from screwball comedy through sci-fi, western, war films and more. Hawks was nominated for a Best Director Oscar in 1942 for “Sergeant York” and received an Honorary Academy Award in 1975 as a “a master American filmmaker whose creative efforts hold a distinguished place in world cinema.”

Roger Ebert hailed Hawks shortly after the director’s death in 1977:

Hawks never consciously aimed for art in his films, and was perhaps quietly amazed that people found it there. But they did. He was never as well known with the public as some of his contemporaries, like Hitchcock and DeMille and Ford. But if you loved movies, you lost a friend the other day. Hawks directed some of the greatest entertainments ever made, and fundamentally shaped the way we perceive many of the great stars.

This series affords Prof. Schenker the opportunity to not only delve into Hawks’ directorial style but also to tease out the various genre conventions the director played with. As with his previous lecture series, Schenker will explore highlights of Hawks’ filmography chronologically, starting with the 1932 gangster classic “Scarface.” The 1940 screwball comedy “His Girl Friday,” starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell, is the topic on July 16. The film noir “The Big Sleep,” based on the Raymond Chandler novel and starring Humphrey Bogart, is the focus on July 23 and discussion of the western “Rio Bravo” concludes the series on July 30.

Mark Schenker’s lectures are accompanied by clips from the films to illustrate the points he is making. His previous lectures on the films of Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, and Billy Wilder and the historical context in which the TV series “Downton Abbey” took place were erudite and entertaining.

The quintet is comprised of Evan Murphy (guitar), David Benedict (mandolin), Bronwyn Keith-Hynes (fiddle), Nate Sabat (bass), and BB Bowness (banjo).

Since their formation in the fall of 2014, Mile Twelve has quickly been on the rise. They released their debut 6-track self titled EP, and performed extensively throughout the U.S., Ireland and Canada, including several major festivals; Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, FreshGrass Festival, Wind Gap Bluegrass Festival and Joe Val Bluegrass Festival. A track from their debut EP was featured on Sirius XM Bluegrass Junction’s “Hand Picked with Del McCoury”, while another track was featured on Spotify’s “Fresh Bluegrass” 2015 playlist. That same year, they were selected as formal showcase artists at the North East Folk Alliance. The summer of 2016 has held more milestones for this young group: opening for Tim O’Brien at the Station Inn in Nashville, winning the Podunk Bluegrass Festival Band Contest and being nominated for a Momentum Award by the International Bluegrass Music Association and adding a fifth band member: mandolin player David Benedict. This winter they will be heading into the studio in Nashville to record their debut full-length album with producer Stephen Mougin at the helm.

Music: Dave Brooks of The Streams plays solo Thurs., June 15

Singer-songwriter Dave Brooks of The Streams plays a solo show at Best Video Performance Space on Thursday, June 15. The show starts at 8 PM and the cover is $5.

The Streams are a four piece rock group formed in 1991. The group is headed by Dave Brooks with his band of grizzled veterans including: Dean Falcone (The Shellye Valauskas Experience), Jeff Wiederschall (Miracle Legion) and New Haven guitar dazzler, Bill Beckett. (For this show, Brooks will play solo.) They recorded an album of driving rock called, “Today, I Died,” available now at itunes.com and most other online music sites.

The Streams play furious to contemplative story songs, many centered around American historic themes. The instrumentation is grounded by a solid rhythm section with some folky flourishes of mandolin, banjo and organ generally accompanied by raging electric guitars. The songs are tightly crafted pop rockers and lyrically run the gamut from blisteringly pompous war cries to quiet acoustic meditations on loss and heartbreaking destruction.

“Today, I Died” featured songs dealing with Civil War themes, inspired by Brooks’ viewing of Ken Burns’ PBS series. Most of the new material is more personally oriented.

“At the time I wrote and recorded these songs, I thought I was on to something I hadn’t seen before and that was exciting,” Brooks said. “What if we just do songs about the Civil War?”
