Description   Classic black comedy about a war-eager general who plans a nuclear apocalypse. A comedy about the destruction of the world by nuclear bombs? In this particularly devious and perverse prophecy a fanatically deranged general (Sterling Hayden) launches an atomic attack on the Soviet Union, triggering frantic efforts by he U.S. President to gather his disparate and argumentative advisors around him, initiate the "hot line," and save the world. Peter Sellers brilliantly plays three roles (a plodding but earnest British captain; the milquetoast deadpan President Merken; and a macabre former Nazi "Edward Teller" clone, Dr. Strangelove). This landmark satire has many good bits (George Scott's arm-flapping, vulture-like imitation of an attacking B-52; missile-based commander Hayden's diatribe on preserving America's "precious bodily fluids" from the Russians; the desperately self-contained efforts of Sellers, as the British captain, to place a single world-saving phone call by first attempting to retrieve a dime held hostage by a defective Coca Cola machine; Slim Pickens' "John Wayne" bronco ride on a adropped nuclear warhead) don't take anything away from the simultaneously funny and sobering impact of the whole.
