Federico Fellini Although renowned Italian director Federico Fellini began his career working in the postwar Neorealist style, which used documentary techniques to tell stories of everyday life among Italy's struggling working class, he became known for flights of storytelling fantasy and breaches of narrative convention. His disruption of linear storytelling with outbursts of the fanciful and the bizarre in films such as 8 1/2 (1963) and Fellini Satyricon (1969) led to the coinage of the adjective "Felliniesque."

Born in 1920, Fellini worked as a cartoonist, journalist and scriptwriter before becoming a director. Variety Lights (1950) was his first film, co-directed with Alberto Lattuada. Fellini's first solo directorial effort was The White Shiek (1952). I Vitelloni and Love in the City followed in 1953. With La Strada (1954), Fellini won the first of his four Academy Awards for Best Foreign Film. (His other Oscar winners were Nights of Cabiria (1957), 8 1/2 and Amarcord (1973).

La Strada co-starred Fellini's wife Giulietta Masina (with Anthony Quinn). They married in 1943 and were together until Fellini's death in 1993. She also had roles in his films Il Bidone (1955), Nights of Cabiria, Juliet of the Spirits (1965) and Ginger and Fred (1986).

A buxom carnival-booth manager who owes back taxes offers herself for one night in a lottery: a nerdy sacristan and a jealous cowboy make for a lovers' triangle. In each, women take charge, but not always happily.
