Lecture on film: Prof. Mark Schenker continues series on Howard Hawks with “The Big Sleep” Sun., July 23, at 2 PM

In this fifth installment of his series “How to Read A Film,” Mark Schenker of Yale College presents four lectures on “The Films of Howard Hawks.” All four lectures will be held on consecutive Sunday afternoons at 2 PM, starting on Sunday, July 9. Admission to each lecture is $7.

In the third installment, Schenker deconstructs Hawks’ knotty 1946 film noir “The Big Sleep”—based on the Raymond Chandler novel—this Sunday, July 23, at 2 PM.

Hawks’ filmography spans the decades—from “The Road to Glory” (1926) through “Rio Lobo” (1970)—and spans genres, from screwball comedy through sci-fi, western, war films and more. Hawks was nominated for a Best Director Oscar in 1942 for “Sergeant York” and received an Honorary Academy Award in 1975 as a “a master American filmmaker whose creative efforts hold a distinguished place in world cinema.”

Roger Ebert hailed Hawks shortly after the director’s death in 1977:

Hawks never consciously aimed for art in his films, and was perhaps quietly amazed that people found it there. But they did. He was never as well known with the public as some of his contemporaries, like Hitchcock and DeMille and Ford. But if you loved movies, you lost a friend the other day. Hawks directed some of the greatest entertainments ever made, and fundamentally shaped the way we perceive many of the great stars.

This series affords Prof. Schenker the opportunity to not only delve into Hawks’ directorial style but also to tease out the various genre conventions the director played with. As with his previous lecture series, Schenker will explore highlights of Hawks’ filmography chronologically, starting with the 1932 gangster classic “Scarface.” The 1940 screwball comedy “His Girl Friday,” starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell, is the topic on July 16. The film noir “The Big Sleep,” based on the Raymond Chandler novel and starring Humphrey Bogart, is the focus on July 23 and discussion of the western “Rio Bravo” concludes the series on July 30.

“The Big Sleep” has a reputation as one of the most inscrutable classic movies. Based on a Chandler novel that was itself both a tour-de-force and a puzzling head scratcher, the film was greeted by New York Times critic Bosley Crowther with the complaint, “For ‘The Big Sleep’ is one of those pictures in which so many cryptic things occur amid so much involved and devious plotting that the mind becomes utterly confused.”

But 50 years later, Roger Ebert hailed the movie despite—or perhaps because of—its perceived imperfections:

It is one of the great film noirs, a black-and-white symphony that exactly reproduces Chandler’s ability, on the page, to find a tone of voice that keeps its distance, and yet is wry and humorous and cares. Working from Chandler’s original words and adding spins of their own, the writers (William Faulkner, Jules Furthman and Leigh Brackett)  wrote one of the most quotable of screenplays: It’s unusual to find yourself laughing in a movie not because something is funny but because it’s so wickedly clever. (Marlowe on the “nymphy” kid sister: “She tried to sit in my lap while I was standing up.”) Unlike modern crime movies which are loaded with action, “The Big Sleep” is heavy with dialogue–the characters talk and talk, just like in the Chandler novels; it’s as if there’s a competition to see who has the most verbal style.

Mark Schenker’s lectures are accompanied by clips from the films to illustrate the points he is making. His previous lectures on the films of Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, and Billy Wilder and the historical context in which the TV series “Downton Abbey” took place were erudite and entertaining. Schenker’s insights should be particularly trenchant when it comes to the classic “The Big Sleep.”

“His Girl Friday,” which stars Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell, is a screwball comedy based on the play “The Front Page” by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur.

Reviewing the film in 1940, New York Times critic Frank S. Nugent wrote:

Hysteria is one of the communicable diseases and “His Girl Friday” is a more pernicious carrier than Typhoid Mary. It takes you by the scruff of the neck in the first reel and it shakes you madly, bellowing hoarsely the. while, for the remaining six or seven. Before it’s over you don’t know whether you have been laughing or having your ears boxed. The veriest bit on the strenuous side, if you follow us.

Charles Lederer, who wrote the adaptation, has transposed it so brilliantly it is hard to believe that Hecht and MacArthur were not thinking of Rosalind Russell, or someone equally high-heeled, when they wrote about the Hildy Johnson who once had a printer’s ink transfusion from a Machiavellian managing editor and never again could qualify as a normal human being.

“Scarface,” released in 1932, is an iconic gangster film. Loosely based on the story of Al Capone’s rise as king of the Chicago rackets, it starred Paul Muni in the title role of Antonio “Tony” Camonte. Hawks co-produced the film with Howard Highes and co-directed with Richard Rosson. The screenplay was adapted by Ben Hecht from the 1929 novel “Scarface” by Armitage Trail.

Reviewing the film in 1932, New York Times critic Mordaunt Hall wrote:

The slaughter in “Scarface, the Shame of a Nation,” the Howard Hughes gangster production which was launched yesterday at the Rialto, is like that of a Shakespearean tragedy, for after the smoke of machine guns and pineapple bombs has blown away and the leading killer has gone to his death on the gallows, the only one of a group of principal characters left is a blonde with carefully plucked eyebrows—she who had been the mistress of two underworld giants.

Prof. Mark Schenker returns for new lecture series starting Sun., July 9; “How to Read a Film” subject is films of Howard Hawks

In this fifth installment of his series “How to Read A Film,” Mark Schenker of Yale College presents four lectures on “The Films of Howard Hawks.” All four lectures will be held on consecutive Sunday afternoons at 2 PM, starting on Sunday, July 9. Admission to each lecture is $7.

Hawks’ filmography spans the decades—from “The Road to Glory” (1926) through “Rio Lobo” (1970)—and spans genres, from screwball comedy through sci-fi, western, war films and more. Hawks was nominated for a Best Director Oscar in 1942 for “Sergeant York” and received an Honorary Academy Award in 1975 as a “a master American filmmaker whose creative efforts hold a distinguished place in world cinema.”

Roger Ebert hailed Hawks shortly after the director’s death in 1977:

Hawks never consciously aimed for art in his films, and was perhaps quietly amazed that people found it there. But they did. He was never as well known with the public as some of his contemporaries, like Hitchcock and DeMille and Ford. But if you loved movies, you lost a friend the other day. Hawks directed some of the greatest entertainments ever made, and fundamentally shaped the way we perceive many of the great stars.

This series affords Prof. Schenker the opportunity to not only delve into Hawks’ directorial style but also to tease out the various genre conventions the director played with. As with his previous lecture series, Schenker will explore highlights of Hawks’ filmography chronologically, starting with the 1932 gangster classic “Scarface.” The 1940 screwball comedy “His Girl Friday,” starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell, is the topic on July 16. The film noir “The Big Sleep,” based on the Raymond Chandler novel and starring Humphrey Bogart, is the focus on July 23 and discussion of the western “Rio Bravo” concludes the series on July 30.

Mark Schenker’s lectures are accompanied by clips from the films to illustrate the points he is making. His previous lectures on the films of Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, and Billy Wilder and the historical context in which the TV series “Downton Abbey” took place were erudite and entertaining.

BestFest Student Films Festival offers free filmmaking workshop—”Camera! Action!”— Sun., June 4

BestFest Student Film Festival, a project of Best Video Film & Cultural Center, will offer a the second of two unique workshops for local high school student filmmakers. Each workshop covers an important but often misunderstood aspect of capturing a scene, led by a local professional expert from the industry.
 
The first workshop, “Lights!”, was held on Sunday, May 21, and led by Emmy Aard-winning documentary filmmaker Rebecca Abbott. The second, “Camera! Action!,” will take place on Sunday, June 4, and will be led by Jay Miles.
 
Each workshop will last 60-90 minutes. They are free for high school students and reservations are highly recommended.
 
BestFest Student Film Festival showcases films by area high school students. The festival is open to all high school students from New Haven, Connecticut, and adjacent communities (East Haven, West Haven, Hamden, North Haven, Woodbridge, and Orange). The first BestFest was held on Dec. 10, 2016.

Action!” (June 4, 3 PM): Jay Miles will detail the traditional (and non-traditional!) strategies for where to place the camera in order to best cover a scene, and address the particular challenges of location shooting. Learn about shot selection, coverage, inserts, wilds and more! Miles will also touch on some of the key elements of directing actors. From rough rehearsal, to the rhythm of calling “rolling, action, cut,” to giving notes and making adjustments. Learn about all of these strategies and more!

He has contributed to such magazines/Websites as Film Threat, Moviemaker, Adorama.com and Techsmith.com, as well as on panels at events including iTVFest, the annual UFVA conference and the All American High School Film Festival. Rebecca Abbott is Professor of Communications at Quinnipiac University and an Emmy-award winning independent filmmaker. Abbott’s documentary subjects range from aeromedical rescue from mid-east war zones, to the history of jazz music in New Haven, to the impact of war on Veterans and the role of arts in healing. Ireland’s Great Hunger and The Irish Diaspora, narrated by actor Gabriel Byrne, is her latest film.

Film screening: “My Beautiful Laundrette” concludes Gen X film series this Sun., May 14

Best Video Film & Cultural Center’s Generation X film series concludes on Sunday, May 14, with a screening of Stephen Frears’ 1985 film “My Beautiful Laundrette.” It is the sixth in a series of six films of the 1980s and early 1990s that touch on the culture and politics that informed so-called “Generation X.” The screening is at 7 PM and admission is $7. The series was conceived and curated by BVFCC members Sarah Strong and Jennifer Griffiths.

Omar (Gordon Warnecke) is a young Pakistani whose prosperous uncle agrees to help get him started in business by managing a dilapidated laundromat. Ex-skinhead Johnny (Daniel Day-Lewis, in the role that made him a star) is Omar’s childhood friend and erstwhile lover. When the two reconnect and resume their relationship amidst the racial tensions of Thatcherite London, they run into obstacles ranging from difficult family members to street gangs to underworld criminals.

The Criterion Collection calls the film “Equal parts coming-of-age saga, gay romance, drug-smuggling thriller, and redemption tale,” but My Beautiful Laundrette is most memorable for two things: its vivid portrait of London’s Pakistani community–a mileu that still remains nearly invisible onscreen–and its delightfully casual acceptance of gay relationships, unheard of in 1985. Screenplay by Hanif Kureishi.

From Vincent Canby’s 1986 New York Times review:

Don’t be put off by the title, which makes it sound like a failed French farce. “My Beautiful Laundrette,” written by Hanif Kureishi and directed by Stephen Frears, is the first real sleeper of the year. The film, which opens today at the Embassy 72d Street Theater, is a rude, wise, vivid social comedy about Pakistani immigrants in London, particularly about the initially naive, university-age Omar (Gordon Warnecke) and Omar’s extended family of wheeler-dealers and unassimilated layabouts.

“My Beautiful Laundrette” has the broad scope and the easy pace that one associates with our best theatrical films. It puts its own truth above the fear of possibly offending someone. Without showing off, it has courage as well as artistry.

Film screening: Gen X series continues with “Thelma and Louise” Sun., May 7, at 7 PM

Best Video Film & Cultural Center’s Generation X film series continues on Sunday, May 7, with a screening of Ridley Scott’s 1991 film “Thelma and Louise.” It is the fifth in a series of six films of the 1980s and early 1990s that touch on the culture and politics that informed so-called “Generation X.” The screening is at 7 PM and admission is $7.

The series was conceived and curated by BVFCC members Sarah Strong and Jennifer Griffiths.

An immediate critical success and winner of numerous awards, Thelma and Louise was the brainchild of first-time screenwriter Callie Khouri, who wanted to write a film in which “two women go on a crime spree.” The result was hailed as “a neo-feminist road movie,” but the themes it explores—friendship, revenge, freedom, and empowerment—are genre-defying and timeless.

The film’s plot is set in motion when Louise (Susan Sarandon) kills the man attempting to rape her friend Thelma (Geena Davis). When the two women realize no one will believe their side of the story, they go on the run, transforming their friendship and themselves in the process. “This movie would never get made today,” lamented one critic in 2011; twenty-six years after its release, “Thelma and Louise” remains in a class by itself. Featuring Harvey Keitel as the investigator tracking the runaway women, and Brad Pitt (in his breakout role) as Thelma’s one-night stand.

Reviewing the movie in The New York Times in 1991, Janet Maslin described it as a “hugely appealing new road movie and praised the “sparkling screenplay by the first-time writer Callie Khouri.” Maslin wrote, “It reimagines the buddy film with such freshness and vigor that the genre seems positively new.”
