The Paul Shanley Quartet seeks to bring fresh perspectives to a wide range of jazz styles from Cole Porter to Thelonious Monk. The goal of our music is to create something in the moment that is unique, exciting, and played with energy and passion. Everyone in the group has their own thoughts and feelings about the music and how they like to play, then we come together through our common interests. Playing live is an essential part of the music and the instant response that we get is the largest reward. Nothing comes close to the experience of listening to great live music. This group will do everything in our power to create a great performance for you the listener.

The Paul Shanley Quartet will feature the inimitable Barry Ries on drums and trumpet, Herb Wilson on tenor saxophone, Gary Grippo on guitar, and Paul Shanley on double bass. Barry Ries has an extensive biography; Barry has taught at the University of Miami, played on countless recordings. Barry has toured the world and back again and he is humble and kind. Gary Grippo is a longtime supporter of jazz in and around New Haven. On top of his busy schedule he keeps a steady gig going and does a morning jazz radio show on 88.7. Gary also studied with the great Bucky Pizzarelli at Rutgers. Herb has an interesting biography in education and performance, a classical saxophone graduate from Hiram College and studied music education at Teacher’s College/Columbia University. Herb has played with Eddy and Bobby Buster, Jessie Austin, Bill Baker’s Five Satins, and many others. Paul Shanley graduated from The Hartt School, studying with Jackie McLean, Steve Davis, and Nat Reeves. Paul has also taught at the Artist Collective, in Hartford, CT. Paul has played with Jenn and Kris Allan, Steve Davis, Wayne Escoffery, Rich Goldstein, Chris Cassey, Andy Bresckin and many others.
