Music: Elm Fiction (CD Release show!), Black Fluff perform Thurs., Apr. 6

The adventurous quartet Elm Fiction and the duo Black Fluff play Best Video Performance Space on Thursday, Apr. 6. The music starts at 8 Pm and the over is $5.

ELM FICTION celebrates the release of their new CD, Score, with a performance at Best Video Film & Cultural Center. They will be presenting selections from the CD, plus brand new music and interpretations of music by Mingus, Messiaen, Bowie, and Waits. Joining them on the bill will be Black Fluff, the duo of Chris Cretella and Mike Paolucci.

Elm Fiction.

The new CD by Elm Fiction tells a story about ten years. It is the music behind the story, the Score, that is presented here. The themes and tones follow a narrative arc that reflects this experience from a few particular angles. One story. One score. The group came together to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the New Haven Improvisers Collective. Each brought a piece in and the group worked together to turn them into a complete work, arranging and connecting the pieces and using ideas and themes across the entire work. Out of Many, One.

ELM FICTION consists of New Haven composers and improvisers Jeff Cedrone (guitar), Bob Gorry(guitar), Tom Hogan(drums), and Adam Matlock(accordion).   Come experience where they’ve been, the excitement/anger/tenacity of where they are now, and a glimpse of where they might be going.

Chris Cretella and Mike Paolucci are a New Haven guitar/drums duo with firepower, intensity, and more than a little grace. They put out a CD recently entitled Black Fluff that creates a mood with telepathy, snarls, and parachutes to what looks like it might be safety. Powerful Stuff.   Best to enjoy the dissolution in person on April 6th.

(UPDATED) Music: Nagual, The Zach Rowden + Chris Cretella Duo, Human Flourishing (solo)Fri., Dec. 30

UPDATED: Human Flourishing (solo) has been added to this bill.

We end our musical year with some adventurous improvisation from three acts, Nagual and The Zach Rowden + Chris Cretella Duo, Human Flourishing (solo). The show starts at 8 PM and the cover is $5.

Nagual

Nagual

Nagual has been performing since 2010, releasing cassettes on various labels and an LP on Ergot Records. David Shapiro (Alexander, HEADROOM, Stefan + Friends) and Ian McColm play guitars and electronics.

“Their tools are more varied than what you might find on a Pandit Pran Nath record, but Ian McColm and David Shapiro’s aim is trained on the same trance-inducing throb,” reads a review in Dusted Magazine.

Zach Rowden

Zach Rowden

Zach Rowden deals with the acoustic and performative possibilities/issues of the upright and electric basses. Currently based in New Haven, Connecticut, and from Richmond, Virginia. Collaborators and associations include Iancu Dumitrescu, Ana-Maria Avram, Robert Black, Lindsey Vickery, Matt Sargent, Leila Bordreuil, Sean Ali, Chris Cretella, and Michael Foster. He has performed at venues such as Harpa (Reykjavik), Issue Project Room, Fridman Gallery, Firehouse 12, Cafe Oto, Real Art Ways, and living rooms or basements found throughout the United States.

Chris Cretella

Chris Cretella

Chris Cretella is a guitarist, composer and improvisor working out of New Haven, CT (well…actually Meriden…but that’s close enough to New Haven…right?). He holds a BA in music from Southern Connecticut State University and an MM in Contemporary Improvisation from The New England Conservatory of Music where he studied with Joe Morris and Anthony Coleman. Since leaving NEC Chris has been working on developing a system of playing on the guitar through regular small group improvisation with frequent collaborators such as Joe Morris, Nigel Taylor, and Zach Rowden. This work on the guitar is often spit back out somewhere down the line as compositions. Very much an improvisor at heart, Chris’ written music often deals with some sort of open parameters.

Human Flourishing—featuring Connor Pereault and Gregory Paul (Pereault will be playing solo for this show)—explores the spiritual connectivity between people through the creation of tense sound environments in a variety of spaces. Whether located in an abandoned farm structure or a New York gallery, the audience is encapsulated by the experience happening before them; transforming the surroundings into an ethereal or satanical plane.

Music: Improvisation by Tom Blancarte, Chris Cretella, Zach Rowden Wed., Nov. 16

Improvisation performers Tom Blancarte, Zach Rowden and Chris Cretella play Best Video Performance Space on Wednesday, Nov. 16. The show starts early—7 PM—and the cover is $10.

For over a decade, Texan bassist Tom Blancarte has been contributing a vivid pallet of dark frequencies to New York’s creative music scene, both as a freelance performer as well as a member of bands such as the electro-acoustic jazz ensemble the Peter Evans Quintet, the banjo-shred power trio Seabrook Power Plant, New Timbralist free jazz noise trio Totem, the duo Sparks with trumpet phenom Peter Evans, an eerie post-apocalyptic duo with wife Louise Dam Eckardt Jensen (The Home of Easy Credit), improv doom tuba trio The Gate and new Danish post-punk improv quartet Sweet Banditry.

tom_blancarte_web

Writes The Wire: “Blancarte scribbles a continuous line of amplified upright bass without ever taking his pen from the metaphoric paper, a twisting, turning stream… that leaves the listener to pick a path through it… small gritty sounds are scraped, twisted and plucked from Blancarte’s bass, with frequent sudden leaps from the minuscule to flamboyant.”
