Music: Missy Raines & The New Hip play bluegrass and more at GuitarTownCT concert Fri., Oct. 20

Missy Raines & the New Hip play Best Video Performance Space on Friday, Oct. 20. The show, which is presented by GuitarTownCT Concert Series, starts at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $20 and are available through GuitarTownCT.com.

With a smokey and seductive alto, 7 Time IBMA Bass Player of the Year, Missy Raines, heads up this all-acoustic ensemble. The territory The New Hip covers is broad and the compass is set by Raines, planted right in the center of the stage directing with her bass every bit as much as she’s playing it.

Raines’ bluegrass roots are deep and long-reaching with touring and recording stints with 1st generation legends such as Eddie Adcock, Mac Wiseman, Jesse McReynolds, Josh Graves and Kenny Baker. A former member of the Claire Lynch Band, The Brother Boys, and one half of the acoustic super duo, Jim Hurst and Missy Raines, Missy is one of the most respected and popular figures within the bluegrass community.

According to a writer at Country Standard Time, Raines Raines, “…launches her well-tended craft off the bluegrass dock into the waters of jazz and folk, holding onto the anchor of bluegrass while pushing steadily at the boundaries of the music that engulfs her.”

Music: Bluegrass from The Honey Dewdrops this Fri., Aug. 4, at 7:30 PM, A GuitarTownCT show

Bluegrass duo The Honey Dewdrops play Best Video Performance Space on Fri., Aug. 4, at 7:30 PM. A GuitarTownCT concert, tickets are available through the GuitartTownCT Web site. Advance tickets are $20; tickets at the door are $25.

The Honey Dewdrops are a Baltimore duo that has won national acclaim. This is their fifth GuitartownCT appearance.

Laura Wortman and Kagey Parrish share more than most couples. As the Honey Dewdrops, they share stages from venues to festivals across North America, stretches of rolling, infinite roadway, and a lot of songs. With tight harmonies and a musical ensemble that includes clawhammer banjo, mandolin and guitars, the effect is to leave listeners with only what matters: the heart of the song and clarity over ornamentation.

After a year and a half of living on the road and 8+ years of touring under their belts, Laura and Kagey now call Baltmore home and it’s where they wrote and recorded their fourth full-length album, Tangled Country, released May 2015 on Randm Records. Acoustic Guitar Magazine describes the set of songs as “a handcrafted sound centered on swarming harmonies and acoustic guitars that churn like a paddlewheel and shimmer like heat waves on the highway.” And like their stage performance, these new songs rock and reel, and then they console you when you come back down.

“Gorgeous harmonies, thrilling arrangements, and some remarkably insightful, honest writing,” said Sing Out Magazine.

“Lilting banjo, gorgeous harmonies and tasteful songs exemplify this duo’s simple yet beautiful music,” said Freddy Jenkins of WNPR.

Music: GuitarTownCT presents The Slocan Ramblers Fri., Apr. 28, at 7:30

GuitarTownCT Concert Series presents The Slocan Rambers Friday, Apr. 28, at Best Video Performance Space. Tickets are $20 and are available through GuitarTownCT.

The Slocan Ramblers are Canada’s young bluegrass band to watch. Rooted in tradition, fearlessly creative and possessing a bold, dynamic sound, The Slocans have quickly become a leading light of Canada’s roots music scene. With a reputation for energetic live shows, impeccable musicianship and an uncanny ability to convert anyone within earshot into a lifelong fan, The Slocans understand that if you polish up the music, you lose the raw excitement that makes it so vibrant.

On their sophomore album Coffee Creek (2015), The Slocan Ramblers blend lightning fast and devilishly intricate instrumentals with sawdust-thick vocals. In the liner notes, producer Chris Coole breaks it down: “What really impressed me while we were working on this album, was that, while they can pull off the precision and virtuosity that is at the backbone of bluegrass, they understand the power of the fragile moment in music.” On Coffee Creek, they’ve done this by staying true to the rough and rowdy roots of the music.
