Music: Elm Fiction (CD Release show!), Black Fluff perform Thurs., Apr. 6

The adventurous quartet Elm Fiction and the duo Black Fluff play Best Video Performance Space on Thursday, Apr. 6. The music starts at 8 Pm and the over is $5.

ELM FICTION celebrates the release of their new CD, Score, with a performance at Best Video Film & Cultural Center. They will be presenting selections from the CD, plus brand new music and interpretations of music by Mingus, Messiaen, Bowie, and Waits. Joining them on the bill will be Black Fluff, the duo of Chris Cretella and Mike Paolucci.

Elm Fiction.

The new CD by Elm Fiction tells a story about ten years. It is the music behind the story, the Score, that is presented here. The themes and tones follow a narrative arc that reflects this experience from a few particular angles. One story. One score. The group came together to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the New Haven Improvisers Collective. Each brought a piece in and the group worked together to turn them into a complete work, arranging and connecting the pieces and using ideas and themes across the entire work. Out of Many, One.

ELM FICTION consists of New Haven composers and improvisers Jeff Cedrone (guitar), Bob Gorry(guitar), Tom Hogan(drums), and Adam Matlock(accordion).   Come experience where they’ve been, the excitement/anger/tenacity of where they are now, and a glimpse of where they might be going.

Chris Cretella and Mike Paolucci are a New Haven guitar/drums duo with firepower, intensity, and more than a little grace. They put out a CD recently entitled Black Fluff that creates a mood with telepathy, snarls, and parachutes to what looks like it might be safety. Powerful Stuff.   Best to enjoy the dissolution in person on April 6th.

Halloween special Music & Film Screening: Light Upon Blight plays a live score to silent classic “Häxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages”

Light_Upon_Blight_cafe_nine_WebAs a special pre-Halloween event, the improvisational group Light Upon Blight will improvise a film score to the silent movie classic “Haxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages” on Friday, Oct. 30. The performance begins at 8 PM and there is a $5 cover. Narration will feature the pre-recorded voice of legendary Beat Generation author William S. Burroughs.

The band urges the public to “come on out to this one time event and help us summon up some ghouls, ghosts, and goblins on the eve before Halloween.” Costumes are absolutely encouraged.

Much like volcanic eruptions, Light Upon Blight performances are uncompromising acts of spontaneous destruction and creation. Purging and destroying the old while simultaneously laying new, fertile ground. No two Light Upon Blight performances are ever the same, just as nature intended. Sounds like: Free Jazz with a noise aesthetic or an exorcism.

For this show, Light Upon Blight will feature Jeff Cedrone (guitar, synth, electronics), Pete Brunelli (bass, electronics), John C. Miller (modular synth), Tom Hogan (drums) and Tony Pellino (synth, guitar).

A 1921 review in Variety said:

Swedish and Danish pictures easily hold the palm for morbid realism and in many cases for brilliant acting and production. Witchcraft made by [Danish director] Benjamin Christensen [funded by a Swedish production company], leaves all the others beaten. It is in reality a pictorial history of black magic, of witches, of the Inquisition, and the thousand and one inhumanities of the superstition-ridden Middle Ages. Many of its scenes are unadulterated horror.

Music: Free improvisation by Fuchsprellen on Thurs., Aug. 28, at 8 PM

Fuchsprellen_BV_050814_02_Web

Fuchsprellen performing at Best Video Performance Space on May 8, 2014.

The free improvising group Fuchsprellen will perform in the Best Video Performance Space on Thursday, Aug. 28. The music starts at 8 PM and the cover is $5.

Fuchsprellen—the name comes from “fox tossing,” a popular blood sport of the 17th and 18th centuries—play free-form, improvised music.  The quintet this evening will be comprised of Steve Chillemi (who plays drums in Captain  Beefheart cover band Doctor Dark) on bass clarinet and soprano saxophone, Peter Riccio (guitarist and singer of The Sawtelles) on drums, Pete Brunelli on electronics, Best Video manager Richard Brown on alto saxophone, and Jeff Cedrone on guitar and synthesizer. No foxes will be harmed in the making of this music.

This is music composed in real time with the various players listening to and responding to the sounds created by their compatriots. Anything can happen and it often does. This music evokes the free jazz of the 1960’s and 1970’s—although it isn’t really “jazz,” per se—and the New York City loft scene of the 1980’s.
