La Tunda is a power trio from New Haven, CT kickin ass one shrimp at a time! With vocal harmonies, balltastic drumming, and catchy yet strange songwriting, La Tunda is sure to make you bang your head or at least scratch it! La Tunda.

La Tunda features Stephany Brown (guitar, vocals), Kriss Santala (bass, vocals) and Andy Beetham (drums). Their digital album “Live from Your Mother’s Attic” is available on Bandcamp.

Lys Guillorn (CT) is a singer/songwriter of the same musical school as Laura Veirs and Kristin Hersh, with a little Emmylou Harris thrown in: dreamy, lyric-driven, melodically interesting, and indefinable.  She makes “oddly uplifting, folk, blues, country-infused, acoustic semi-electric psychedelic dark pop music.” (Geraint Jones, Comes With a Smile, UK). In recent years, Guillorn has released a full-length CD, an EP, and a collection of compilation tracks on her own Little Cowgirl Records. Music: Lys Guillorn Band, Calvin DeCutlass live Thurs., Aug. 20, at 8 PM

Lys_Guillorn_BV_021215_02_WebLys Guillorn & Her Band play the Best Video Performance Space on Thursday, Aug. 20. Calvin DeCutlass opens. The cover charge is $5 and the music starts at 8 PM.

Lys Guillorn is a singer/songwriter of the same musical school as Laura Veirs and Kristin Hersh, with a little Emmylou Harris thrown in: dreamy, lyric-driven, melodically interesting, and indefinable. She released her second full-length CD of original material, “Winged Victory,” in November, 2013.

Chip McCabe reviewed her album on CTNow.com, writing:

She comes at the listener not only with a full band  in tow, but also with a cavalcade of guest musicians and a litany of her own instruments, each of which she’s extremely adept at. On this album Guillorn’s brand of folksy Americana is drenched in 60’s pop harmonies and an indie rock aesthetic. While she’s not afraid to bust out the lap steel, she’s also not afraid to incorporate the occasional cello accompaniment or horn section. It’s an album that’s pretty indicative of an artist who’s spent time floating in and out of varying genres for the last few years and coming back home to incorporate some of that into her own work. Again, positive musical experiences meeting with raw talent on wide open display here.

Calvin DeCutlass emerged as a singer-songwriter and guitarist in the New Haven scene during the early aughts with his bands The Tires and The Nortons (with local legend James Velvet and Johnny Java). He plays what Patrick Ferrucci of the New Haven Register called “intelligent, country-tinged folk rock” and he once tried out for the New Haven Cutters.

Movie-themed benefit for WPKN-FM radio on Fri., Apr. 17, at 7 PM

WPKN_benefit_WebBest Video has donated use of the Performance Space on Friday, Apr. 17, for a cool fundraiser for community-supported radio station WPKN-FM (89.5 on your radio dial). The long list of musicians participating in “Late Nite Double Feature Picture Show: Movie Songs”—presented by Tripeg Lobo and co-hosted by Elisa Flynn, Lys Guillorn and WPKN’s Valerie Richardson—will play a cover of a song from a movie (anything from the movie theme to a song playing in a scene), then do one original song about their favorite movie.

Tickets are $10 in advance at Best Video (cash only) or at the door. Doors open at 7 PM; the show starts at 7:30. One hundred-percent of the ticket price goes to support WPKN’s amazing free-form programming.

Based in Bridgeport, WPKN has been offering up an eclectic menu of free-form programming and public affairs since the 1960s. Originally affiliated with the university of Bridgeport, WPKN became independent in 1992.

The lineup of performers:

An Historic, Stephany Brown & Kriss Santala, Wendy Cahill, Chica non Grata, Elisa Flynn, Lys Guillorn, George Hakkila, Dave Hogan, Jesus & The White Russians (featuring Jon Schlesinger of No Line North), Ponybird, Spectral Fangs, The Sawtelles and Zoo Front.

Music: Happy Ending (with Best Video’s Richard Brown & Hank Hoffman), Lys Guillorn on Thurs., Feb. 12, at 8 PM

Happy_Ending_Lys_BV_021215_WebHappy Ending, featuring Best Video’s own Hank Hoffman and Richard Brown, plays the Best Video Performance Space on Thursday, Feb. 12. Acclaimed indie rock songstress Lys Guillorn will open with a short solo set. The music starts at 8 PM and the cover is $5.

Happy Ending plays electric rock ‘n’ roll, mixing original compositions influenced by garage rock, folk rock and psychedelia—oftentimes with a political slant—with cover songs from the 1960’s and 1970’s.

Happy Ending has released three albums. The most recent, “Electricity for the Youth of Today,” was recorded live at Best Video Performance Space in December of 2013. The vinyl LP and 45 “Have A Nice Day” came out in 1984 and the compact disc “Smile for the Camera” in 1996. John Foster, editor of Op Magazine, described “Have A Nice Day” as a “future cult item for the collectors.” Hank Hoffman sings and plays guitar; Richard Brown plays guitar and alto saxophone. Tom Smith is on drums and Randy Stone plays bass. Happy Ending has a Facebook page.

(UPDATED AUG. 4!) Music: Lys Guillorn & Her Band on Wed., Aug. 13, at 8 PM; Seth Tiven added to the bill

Lys_Guillorn_Band_040313_WebLys Guillorn & Her Band play the Best Video Performance Space on Wednesday, Aug. 13. The cover charge is $5 and the music starts at 8 PM. Singer-songwriter Seth Tiven—formerly of 1980’s Boston alt-rock band Dumptruck and 1970’s New Haven new wave group Saucers—has been added to the bill. He will open the show with a set accompanied by Jeff Wiederschall on drums.

Lys Guillorn is a singer/songwriter of the same musical school as Laura Veirs and Kristin Hersh, with a little Emmylou Harris thrown in: dreamy, lyric-driven, melodically interesting, and indefinable.  She makes “oddly uplifting, folk, blues, country-infused, acoustic semi-electric psychedelic dark pop music.” (Geraint Jones, Comes With a Smile, UK). Veteran singer/songwriter guitarist Seth Tiven is spotlighting his talents with a new self-produced CD, fittingly titled “Solitude.” Purely by coincidence, Rykodisc recently released a collection of some of Dumptruck’s best music titled “Haul of Fame,” covering several decades of Tiven’s music career. Co-founder of the ‘80s college radio darlings, Dumptruck, Tiven got his start playing music in the New Haven and Boston indie-rock scene. His first band, Saucers, included drummer Mark Mulcahy, who went on to be singer of the now-defunct Miracle Legion, and bass player, Craig Bell, who had previously been in the Cleveland proto-punk band Rocket From the Tombs, which spawned the legendary punk group the Dead Boys and art-punk pioneers Pere Ubu.

Music: The Sawtelles, Lys Guillorn perform Thurs., Mar. 13, at 8 PM

Sawtelles_Guillorn_WebThe Sawtelles, who played the first concert in the Best Video Performance Space, will play the last show in the original room. They will be joined on the bill by Lys Guillorn playing a solo set. The music starts at 8 PM and the cover is $5.

The music of husband and wife duo The Sawtelles is a balance of four elements: alternate-tuned guitar, stand-up drum kit (ala Velvet Underground’s Mo Tucker) and two voices. Sparse but intricately arranged pop that is as lush as it is threadbare makes what is played as important as what isn’t. Peter plays guitar and Julie plays drums; they both sing. Their sparse but intricately arranged pop is as lush as it is captivatingly unique.

Their self-produced DYI philosophy aligns them more with the hand painted Sun Ra LP’s of 1950’s and 60’s then it does with those striving for mainstream commercial success. They have released 4 CDs; for a preview, see their website.

She is working on her second full-length CD of original material. At the Best Video Performance Space on April 3, she will perform with her full band.

Vincent Bator profiled Guillorn in the Hartford Indie Music Examiner last April, writing:

Labeling the 38-year old Guillorn’s musical style is too confining and counter-intuitive, but a starting point is her reverence for distinctly American music. Neither a straight-ahead purist nor a campy reinterpreter of the country and folk classics she’s obviously influenced by, Guillorn’s voice is authentic, stark and refreshing…

While she’s invariably compared to artists like Laura Veirs, Emmylou Harris and Kristen Hersh, it’s not a stretch to add Lisa Germano and Lucinda Williams to the list of comparisons. There’s an element of subtle experimentalism in both her songcraft and recordings; like Germano’s, and a subtext of world-weariness in her vocals similar to Williams’. On the surface, the songs’ arrangements seem conventional, but below it, odd tunings and bits of sound collage-y stuff give texture and true artistry to the tunes. Guillorn’s voice is at times restrained, hushed and ragged — no histronics here.

Guillorn was interviewed for Chip’s Unnamed Local Band show and played one of her songs. Watch:
