Music: GuitarTownCT Concert Series present Zoe & Cloyd Fri., Mar. 16, at 7:30 PM

GuitarTownCT Concert Series presents the bluegrass duo Zoe & Cloyd at Best Video Performance Space on Friday, Mar. 16. The show starts at 7:30 PM. Advance tickets are $15 and are available through the GuitarTownCT Web site.

Zoe & Cloyd spring from deep roots in American music. Founding members of the acclaimed Americana trio, Red June, and long-time veterans of the Asheville, NC music scene, Natalya Zoe Weinstein and John Cloyd Miller are set to release their second full-length album in spring of 2017. Highlighting their emotive songwriting and signature harmonies, this new recording finds the duo returning to a full band sound with Kevin Kehrberg on bass, and special appearances from Will Straughan of Red June on dobro and Jens Kruger of the Kruger Brothers on banjo. The new record showcases the breadth of their collective musical spirit, seamlessly combining original folk, country, old-time and bluegrass with sincerity and zeal. Zoe & Cloyd’s debut recording, Equinox (2015), met with high acclaim and the pair have continued to gain momentum with a 1st place win at the prestigious FreshGrass Festival Duo Contest along with performances at MerleFest, Music City Roots and more.

John Cloyd Miller’s foundation in traditional bluegrass and old-time music coupled with his modern sensibility combine to make him a natural musician and performer. A twelfth generation North Carolina native and the grandson of pioneering bluegrass fiddler and NC Folk Heritage Award winner Jim Shumate, his Appalachian roots run deep. John is well known for his haunting mountain voice as well as his instrumental prowess and award-winning songwriting. He is a 1st place winner of the prestigious Chris Austin Songwriting Contest and a recipient of an Artist Fellowship for songwriting by the North Carolina Arts Council.

Natalya Zoe Weinstein also comes from a musical family: her father is master jazz pianist and her grandfather, originally from Russia, was a professional klezmer musician. She is an accomplished fiddler in a variety of styles as well as an inspired singer and songwriter. While trained classically in her home state of Massachusetts, she has spent many years fine-tuning her bluegrass and old-time fiddling with some of the country’s top traditional musicians. Now a mentor to many young players, Natalya is a sought after instructor and is in high demand as a teacher and session musician.

Music: Rescheduled Kath Bloom, Dan Greene show takes place Sun., Mar. 11, at 7 PM

Singer-songwriter Kath Bloom and Mountain Mover Dan Greene play sets Sunday, Mar. 11, at Best Video Performance Space. The music starts at 7 PM and the cover is $5. This show was rescheduled from Feb. 17 due to snow.

Kath Bloom.

For fans of the song and how to feel it. Kath Bloom is some kind of legend. She comes from a special place where country, blues and folk are made beautifully translucent and emotive. She has a special gift – her voice is delicate and tender, yet retains that raw emotion and hard worn truths that allows each sung word to be felt.

The more you hear of Kath Bloom, the more you notice it’s not just the arresting voice, but the power of the songwriting. “Beautiful” is the typical response—the kind of beauty that comes from truth, musical and the deeply lyrical. There are no good comparisons, but if you like the deep well of Emmylou Harris, the more poignant lyrics of Lou Reed, the joy of Maher Shalal Hash Baz or even Joni Mitchell, you’re kinda in the right zone. In reality, she’s simply Kath Bloom: horse whisperer, vocalist, mum, songwriter and a beautiful person.

Her albums recorded with Loren Mazzacane Connors in the 70′s/80′s are rare things, full of songs that float and melt into the ether. Impossibly beautiful and hard to find on LP, but check the reissues from a few years ago . In the 90′s Kath’s music was famously featured in Richard Linklater’s film “Before Sunrise.” Since then she has been busy writing and recording to great acclaim.

Dan Greene.

Dan Greene has a long history in New Haven music, dating back to the early 1990s when he played in the duo The Bug with (non-relative) Jeffrey Greene. Morphing into a full band, The Bug emerged from its chrysalis as The Butterflies of Love, who had an impressive run here and in the UK as purveyors of dreamy garage pop. Since The Butterflies of Love when on hiatus, Greene has poured his prolific songwriting skills into The Mountain Movers. Since 2011, The Mountain Movers have evolved into a powerhouse psychedelic ensemble, prone to immersive jams as well as deft turns on Greene’s melodic pop songs. After more than a decade either self-releasing music or putting out LPs on local Safety Meeting Records label, the group’s self-titled sixth album was released on May, 2017 on the national indie Trouble in Mind label.

Greene used to regularly perform solo but has cut back on those outings in the past couple of years. This is a rare chance to see Greene in an intimate space performing songs that you might recognize from recent powerhouses concerts offered by the full band. For this concert Dan will perform solo.

Music: The Grand Par, Laini (solo) play Fri., Mar. 9

The Grand Par and Laini (solo) from Laini and The Wildfire play Best Video Performance Space Friday, Mar. 9. The show starts at 8 PM (doors at 7) and the cover is $5.

The Grand Par.

The Grand Par is a 3 piece original rock band from New Haven, CT formed in February 2017. Scott Daly (vocals, guitar) from the successful international solo project of Arms and Legs, was looking to start a band after living and touring in China and performing session work in LA and NYC. Scott settled in CT to be closer to family and that’s where he met up with local CT musician Jake Nest (bass, vocals). Jake played in many different successful CT hardcore and punk bands. Scott and Jake were on the hunt for a drummer when a mutual friend reached out to Wes Cross, (drums, percussion, vocals) former and original drummer of Hot Rod Circuit. After the first practice, all 3 knew this was going to be something special.

The Grand Par’s music can be best described as big driving rock songs with catchy hooks and melodies drawing influences ranging from The Beatles, Cheap Trick, and The Replacements. A home studio 3-song recording recorded by Jay Russell (Hot Rod Circuit) is currently available. A full album will be in the works Spring 2018.

Laini.

Laini and the Wildfire is a piano-fronted pop rock trio from New Haven, CT. Their latest record, “Wandering,” released in November 2017, blends the pop sensibility of artists like Adele and the raw edge of female-fronted rock bands, like Florence + the Machine, inflected with a touch 60s soul. Indie Spoonful (2017) writes: “’Wandering’ is a stand-out album…each song has potential to stand alone as a top notch single, leaving the listening with plenty of memorable tunes that will be stuck in their head.”

The band’s sound highlights Laini’s vocals, along with percussive piano, anthemic group harmonies, and the powerful rhythm of bass and drums—using guitars and other instrumentation as a subtle polish. “Wandering” explores past regret, future hopes, and fear of change in context of Laini’s decision to resign as a therapist to pursue music full-time. The band has grown rapidly since the debut of their EP in May 2016, which ranked #5 album of the year by Cygnus Radio host G. Gone. Endorsements from Westone Audio, Moniker Guitars, and GMS Drums further validate the industry’s belief in the band’s potential. Together, Laini Marenick, Mark Marenick, and Rob Siraco have developed an identity that transcends generations and translates into a captivating live performance, where the band, along with Laini’s gold glitter piano, shines front and center.

Multi-disciplinary performance works Thurs., Mar. 1, by Abioseh Joseph Cole & David Brensilver; starts at 7 PM

Come to Best Video Film & Cultural Center on Thursday, Mar. 1, to experience a double bill of works by Abioseh Joseph Cole and David Brensilver. The show will begin at 7 p.m. with “Poetry for the Living,” a spoken-word performance by poet Abioseh Joseph Cole. The evening will continue with a staged reading of “Music for the Doomed,” a performance piece by musician and writer David Brensilver that incorporates his script, music, and lyrics, as well as poetry by Abioseh Joseph Cole.

$5-$10 cover, which will support the presentation of more art

About “Music for the Doomed”:

In the not-too-distant future, a poet-composer — an artivist — is sentenced to prison under the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act and the Cultural Sedition Act for writing and disseminating a protest song that contravened the principles of free-market capitalism and adversely affected an industry’s bottom line. A journalist on the Injustice Beat, determined to paint a word-picture of Bravery in the Time of the Cultural Clampdown, discovers the uncomfortable reach of complicity.

In this staged reading, David plays the role of the journalist and Abioseh plays the role of the artivist.

“Music for the Doomed” is itself a part of a larger project — a novel that’s in the planning stage. In a sense, “Music for the Doome”d exists both as a fictional work of art and as a real one, with discrete elements.

About the artists:

Abioseh Joseph Cole is a vegan poet, blacktivist, financial coach, teacher, and hip-hop artist, producer, and recording engineer. He started writing in 1989, at the age of 9, and has since found poetry to be his truest form of expression, be it in rap form or in prose. While most of his career has been spent honing his talents in hip-hop, the last year has been focused on spoken-word poetry. He has performed at the Vegan World Summit at the University of California, Berkeley, Connecticut College, Yale University, Mystic Museum of Art (Connecticut), The Green Earth Poets Cafe in Brooklyn, New York, and other venues, and has won poetry slams at Poets Realm in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Lizard Lounge in Boston, Massachusetts, The Nuyorican Poets Cafe in New York City, and The Love Jones Experience at the Russell in Hartford, Connecticut. He is a member of the 2018 Connecticut Slam Team, Verbal Slap. Abioseh has also taught poetry workshops to students ranging from middle school age to adulthood at Neighborhood Music School and through a residency at Yale University, and elsewhere.

David Brensilver studied percussion at the Peabody Conservatory of Music and at the Juilliard School and has performed over the years with such ensembles as the American Symphony Orchestra, Rhode Island Philharmonic, Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra, Aerial Trio, and numerous bands working across various musical styles. An accomplished writer, he’s worked as a journalist at The Day (Connecticut) and its string of community weeklies and as the editor of The Arts Paper (a monthly publication of the Arts Council of Greater New Haven). He’s written for New Music Box (an online publication of New Music USA) and Modern Drummer magazine and is a contributing writer at Drum! magazine. He’s also contributed to When Falls the Coliseum: a journal of American culture [or lack thereof]. David is the author of the satirical novel ExecTV, which was published in 2005 by ENC Press, and the often-irreverent animal-rights blog The Daily Maul. His most-recent work, “Music for the Doomed,” is a multidisciplinary performance piece about complicity and its costs that has had readings at Compassionfest, in Hamden, Connecticut, and Open Source Gallery, in Brooklyn, New York. He’s vegan.

Formed in 2009, Straight to VHS has long been a staple of the vibrant music scene in New London. The band has previously released three albums and will be releasing a new EP in 2016.

Straight to VHS released its latest record “Weekend Weekend Weekend” in 2014 and watched it garner positive press and airplay on some of the top college radio stations along the east coast. The album helped earn the band a Connecticut Music Award and even caught the attention of CBS Connecticut, who named the trio one of its top five bands to watch in 2015. Music: Forrest Harlow plays solo Wed., Jan. 31, at 8 PM

Musician Forrest Harlow plays a solo show at Best Video Performance Space on Wednesday, Jan. 31. The show starts at 8 PM and there is a $5 cover. Pete Riccio, songwriter for The Sawtelles, opens with a solo set.

Richard Forrest Harlow began singing and playing music in high school with his first band and switched to autoharp & keyboards when he started writing songs. Soon after his regular appearances at New Haven Connecticut’s legendary The Exit Coffeehouse began, he started hosting their Thursday Night Open Microphone. Being a disciple of the folk rock/Appalachian folk hybrid, much was gleaned during this stint. Then along came Glam Rock, Art Rock and Punk Rock and the hybrid grew.

It was at this point that Forrest joined forces with Craig Bell (Rocket From The Tombs, Saucers and Michael Barone & Jon March (Disturbance) to form The Plan. They released Harlow’s “I Love NY/I Hate NY,” a college radio favorite, on Gustav Records. But soon after he left the band, tiring of sharing the singing /songwriting duties not keeping up with his song output which was steadily increasing.

The years and lineups flew by (The Day When, The Nest); the song catalogue grew and grew, recording an LP always thwarted by a conflict of no cash and Harlow’s fondness for perfection. Numerous low tech attempts were scuttled.

Finally he was approached by Golden Microphone to contribute a song to “The Amy O’Neill Songbook,” a benefit CD for Amy who was born with a rare and progressive skin disease. Forrest recruited friends Lauren Agnelli (Nervus Rex, The Washington Squares) and Christopher Listorti (Call It Arson) to record ” World For Granted” which became the lead track.

In 2011 he recorded “Kennedys & Kings” with Michael Barone, Justin Good, Evan Levine, Brian Wolfe & co-producer/engineer Eric Lichter at Eric’s Dirt Floor Recording Studio. He will return there in 2018 to record his new collection of songs. His new move instrumentally is the addition of new Electro-Harmonix signal based keyboard sounds & sitar triggered by his autoharp.

Forrest lives in Chester CT with his wife Laurie, their dog Emily Bronte, cat Smokey Joe and their horses Cristal (Forrest’s majestic Cheval Canadien) and Brooke (Lauries Arabian) in 1928 brick farmhouse.

Pete Riccio.

Pete Riccio is songwriter for The Sawtelles, a trio that features his wife Julie on drums and BVFCC Executive Director Richard Brown on guitar and sax. Riccio, a drummer by training, plays guitar and sings in The Sawtelles, crafting his tunes from a bevy of alternate tunings on guitar. This is a rare solo appearance for him.
