Music: Celtic/Nordic Folk from Wikfors & Mossman play Thurs., Oct. 5

Gary Wikfors and Angus Mossman present an evening of Celtic and Nordic folk music Thursday, Oct. 5, at Best Video Performance Space. The show starts at 8 PM and the cover is $5.

Gary Wikfors is a collector and player of stringed instruments with wide-ranging musical interests. You may have heard Gary as a member of several Connecticut ensembles: The Walkingwood Mandolin Quartet (which he founded more than fifteen years ago), Connecticut’s longest-lived contradance band The Fiddleheads, the acoustic-country septet Goldrush, and the anachronistic ZuZazz String Orkestra. A player of mandolins, guitars, banjos, and other fretted instruments for many years, recently Gary became fascinated with the national instrument of Sweden, the nyckelharpa (key fiddle), and acquired a standard and an octave instrument over the past three years. Learning first from YouTube videos and CDs, and last year from indigenous players during a stay in Sweden, Gary has learned traditional and recently-composed tunes from Sweden and other Nordic countries and composed new music on his ‘harpor.

Angus Mossman grew up in the company of many instruments, rolling hills to wander, and a pet turkey vulture. Back home in Wisconsin he plays in three folk groups including his family band, Wrannock. Now, a student at Yale, he spends his time gardening, skinning frogs at the Peabody Museum, playing music, and occasionally studying. Over the last four years he has played low whistle and cittern in various groups, the most notable being Pitnacree. He is always looking forward to opportunities to expand his repertoire and share his unique style.

Gary and Angus began playing together a year and a half ago. They supplement the magical combination of nyckelharpa and cittern with some of the other instruments they play in a lively and inventive collaboration. The sound is ancient and brand new at once – a fresh sound with deep roots in northwestern Europe.
