Music: Solo singer-songwriters Olive Tiger, An Historic play Thurs., Dec. 7

Olive Tiger and An Historic play solo sets at Best Video Performance Space on Thursday, Dec. 7. The show starts at 8 PM and the cover is $5.

Olive Tiger is driven by the obsessive need to bring imagined sounds to life, creating experiences of beauty and transcendence in the process. Based in New Haven, CT, Olive uses cello, guitar, and electronics to craft a unique blend of melody-driven orchestral sounds. Olive’s hauntingly beautiful vocals and cello are intensified by a loop pedal, crafting a result landing somewhere between My Brightest Diamond, tUnE-yArDs, St. Vincent, and Andrew Bird. Olive Tiger’s debut album “Until My Body Breaks” was released September 2016. With her group (also known as Olive Tiger), she played Center Church on the Green in New Haven this past June as part of the ALTAR-d Spaces programming of the International Festival of Arts & Ideas.

An Historic is the songwriting alias of composer/accordionist/vocalist Adam Matlock, focusing on frenzied and narrative songs with elements of Balkan music, cabaret, many varieties of art-song and American soul and punk. Songs are performed live with a core of solo accordion and voice, and sometimes fleshed out and fully inhabited with the confident interplay of guitarist Chris Cretella, percussionist Michael Paolucci, multi-instrumentalist Brian Slattery and bassists Mike Tepper or Carl Testa.

Indie folk singer-songwriters Olive Tiger (solo) and Daniel Eugene play Best Video Performance Space on Friday, Mar. 3. The show starts at 8 PM and the cover is $5.

Olive Tiger.

Olive Tiger’s debut album “Until My Body Breaks” is available everywhere September 2016.

Daniel Eugene is a mystic-poet type from the rural New Haven outskirt of Bethany, CT — the hill before the valley.

Daniel Eugene.

Eugene’s major musical influences include both sacred and secular vocal music of the 16th century, especially Elizabethan part-songs from composers such as John Dowland and Thomas Tomkins. Jethro Tull continues as a major influence and it cannot be overestimated the impact on Eugene of their seminal prog-rock album “Thick As A Brick.” Certainly not least to be mentioned as important influences are the diva-ballads of such outstanding female pop vocalists as Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and Celine Dion.

UPDATED! Music: Olive Tiger offers indie folk on Fri., June 26, at 8 PM; Michael Kusek added to bill

Olive_Tiger_WebUPDATE 6/23/15: Guitarist/singer-songwriter Michael Kusek has been added to this show.

Olive Tiger  and Michael Kusek play the Best Video Performance Space on Friday, June 26. The music starts at 8 PM and the cover is $5.

In early 2013, Olive Tiger emerged blinking from the ashes of Tallahassee-based gypsy folk group Two Live Tigers, when all members of said group found themselves in different corners of the USA.

Confused and lonesome, Olive returned to her home state of CT and was promptly buried under three feet of snow. The resulting insanity gave birth to a new direction for Olive Tiger, combining her gypsy folk roots with, rock, classical, & pop, creating an experimental expanse of sound linking influences from Andrew Bird, St. Vincent, tUnE-yArDs, and Joanna Newsom.

Combining cello, guitar, and voice, (frequently with a loop pedal), Olive currently sails to new territories while working on her debut album.  Olive Tiger performs in a variety of configurations from solo to full-band setup, featuring Jesse Newman on violin and Dane Scozzari on drums. For this performance, she will play as a duo with Newman on violin.

Michael Kusek is a New Haven based singer songwriter who has until recently been known primarily as the lead guitarist of local folk-rockers Elison Jackson. Kusek’s solo material, while still being guitar based, is much more ambient, sometimes gentle, while exploring darker, even sinister tones and themes.
