Music: Noise pop mavens Procedure Club play Thurs., May 4, at 8 PM

Procedure Club at Lyric Hall March, 2017.

Noise pop band Procedure Club returns to Best Video Film & Cultural Center on Thursday, May 4. The tunes start at 8 PM and there is a $5 cover.

Procedure Club is a band from New Haven.  They formed in 2007, and had releases on Slumberland Records, Sixteen Tamborines (Japan), and Beko Disques (France) and others. The current lineup features Adam, Andrea, Tim, Wes, and Kyle.

Their most recent record, “Pinky Swear,” was released on Safety Meeting Records in August, 2016. “Pinky Swear” is Procedure Club’s follow up to their Slumberland Records release, “Doomed Forever.” With undercurrents of haunting airiness and mechanical instability, Procedure Club’s latest work is like a ghost driving the Beast Of Turin through a hailstorm. The song structures consist of heavily reverbed melodic vocals, stuttering mechanized drum beats, dirty bass, synths, and alternately washed-out and jangly guitars.

Sharing a fondness for the noisy shoegazers and gentle C-86 artists, Adam Malec and Andrea Belair formed Procedure Club in New Haven, CT in December of 2007. After self-releasing a limited run of CD-Rs and cassettes — lo-fi bedroom recordings of bass, drum machines, and guitar fuzz, all topped with Andrea’s sweet, airy vocals — the duo posted a free-to-download album on BEKO DSL and a 7” titled Slut Fossil on Sixteen Tambourines. In 2010, the duo was signed to Slumberland Records (home of similar-minded artists Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Black Tambourine, and the Lodger) and Malec and Belair started laying the groundwork for their first official album.

Music: Procedure Club brings the noise pop on Fri., Mar. 27, at 8 PM

Procedure_Club_WebIndie rock recording artists Procedure Club resurface after a four-plus year hiatus with a show at Best Video on Friday, Mar. 27. The music starts at 8 PM and the cover is $5.

Procedure Club is a band from New Haven.  They formed in 2007, and had releases on Slumberland Records, Sixteen Tamborines (Japan), and Beko Disques (France) and others.

They haven’t had a record out since their 2010 album, “Doomed Forever.”  This hiatus is primarily because Adam Malec broke and/or lost recording equipment (including a hard drive with tons of cool new music on it) and secondarily because Andrea Belltower went away for graduate studies. Long time collaborator Tim Borkovski went out and bought a new sound card and other equipment so the band could get back to recording again. So that’s what they’ve all been doing lately in East Rock.

They are currently adding the finishing touches to a new album of songs that they are planning to release this Fall, hopefully on Safety Meeting Records. Adam Malec describes it as “a continuation of our melodic merger of chaos and order, but perhaps with an elevation in musical maturity, in an interesting way.” He didn’t really say that verbatim, because Tim is writing this and paraphrasing what he just said, but Adam agrees with it.  Andrea didn’t want to add anything, but stated that she wants the bio to be serious and short, even though she first suggested that it be written with a grand biblical-sounding tone. Adam just broke Andrea’s rice cooker. I’m not kidding. I thought he almost broke my Yamaha mixer last night when he dropped a computer monitor on it.

Procedure Club welcomes local noise artist and WPKN 89.5 FM DJ Kristianne Hall to the mix, layering in her unique brand of synthesized chaotic atmosphere, and everyone agrees that her contribution is fantastic and critical to the fullness of the live show.

Hark!  Hear this and Rejoice!  And those among us with weary and wayward hearts who dwell upon a soundless earth within the soundless space shall be filled with the musical grace and glory of wickedness conquered, and it shall be good.  Hopefully.

Music: M.T. Bearington to play Wed., July 31, at 8 PM

MT_Bearington_portraitM.T. Bearington will play the Best Video Performance Space on Wednesday, July 31. The cover is $5 and the music starts at 8 PM.

Matt Thomas knows how to write a song—as evidenced in over a decade of music-making with the Weigh Down, Leaves of Lothlorien, and Short Pants Romance.

Sometime around 2006, he found himself in between projects, wondering what to do next. The answer came as soon as he got his hands on a Mac and discovered Garage Band.

He toiled and tinkered. He wrote and recorded one song. One song led to many. He shared a few with people. The people really liked them—particularly Jason Hamel of Mates of State, who encouraged Matt to put a band together to share a bill with the Mates and Carlos Wells, who released the collection of bedroom recordings as “A Cloak of Nouns and Loss” on Safety Meeting Records in 2008.

Three drummers, four bassists, three guitarists, and one trumpeter/keyboardist later—the Bearington Band remains busy as ever.

The current lineup features Thomas, Bill Readey (guitar, vocals), Jason Bates (drums) and Chris Klouman (bass).

Over the past two years, the band has shared the stage with Deerhoof, the Drums, and Tim Easton at New London’s 2009 I AM Festival, rocked with Of Montreal and Lupe Fiasco at the 2010 BOMB Fest, and opened for Mates of State on a Northeast stint in February 2010.

Their full-band, follow-up effort “Love Buttons” hits the shelves on Valentine’s Day 2011. Produced by Fuzzy Rainbow (Fake Babies, Eula), with a hand from Greg Giorgio at Tarquin Studios (Interpol, The National), it’s an upbeat collection of sonic musings on various forms of love—from the traditional to the twisted—through the eyes of characters real and fictional.

And just in case that’s not enough to keep you entertained, don’t fear—the next record “Silent Immortals” about a gang of vampire mimes is already in the works. That’s right, we said “vampire mimes.”
