Tom Hazuka.

UPDATE: Six authors (not the previously reported four)—Tom Hazuka, April Bradley, Doug Mathewson, Jessica Treat, Alison McBain, and Paul Beckman—will read from their “flash fiction” at Best Video Film & Cultural Center on Friday, Oct. 13. The events starts at 7:30 PM. Admission is free but donations to support BVFCC are highly encouraged.

“Flash fiction” is defined as extremely short fiction—usually no more than 500-2,000 words and preferably far fewer—that retains an accomplished plot arc and character development.

Featured reader Tom Hazuka has published three novels, over sixty-five short stories, and a book of nonfiction, “A Method to March Madness: An Insider’s Look at the Final Four.” He has edited or co-edited six anthologies of short stories: “Flash Fiction;” “Flash Fiction Funny;” “Sudden Flash Youth;” “You Have Time for This;” “A Celestial Omnibus: Short Fiction on Faith;” and “Best American Flash Fiction of the 21st Century” (Shanghai, China). New flash anthologies are forthcoming in 2018 from Persea Books and Woodhall Press. He teaches fiction writing at Central Connecticut State University. Links to his writing and original songs can be found at tomhazuka.com.

Doug Mathewson likes to stay home with his wife and their two cats and do as little real work as possible. He is known as a writer and editor of short fiction. His stories have appeared here and there, now and then, in publications around the world and perhaps beyond. More of his fiction can be found at www.little2say.org, an online journal of “True Stories From Imaginary Lives.” Much of his time is spent as Editor of Blink-Ink, which is a quarterly print publication of 50 word fiction. More information at www.blink-ink.org.

April Bradley is from Goodlettsville, Tennessee and lives with her family on the Connecticut shoreline near New Haven, Connecticut. Her writing has appeared or is forthcoming in Smokelong Quarterly’s “Why Flash Fiction” Series, The Airgonaut, Boston Literary Magazine, Blue Fifth Review, CHEAP POP, Flash Frontier, Hermeneutic Chaos Journal Magazine, The Journal of Compressed Creative Arts, Narratively, NANO Fiction, and Thrice Fiction, among others. She has a Master’s in Ethics from Yale University and studied Philosophy and Theology as a post-graduate scholar at Cambridge University. Her fiction has been nominated for the Best of the Net Anthology and for the 2017 Pushcart Prize. She is a MFA candidate at the Sewanee School of Letters and a Resident Writing Coach at Writers Helping Writers. Find her on Twitter at @april_bradley.

Paul Beckman’s story, “Healing Time” was one of the winners in the 2016 The Best Small Fictions and his 100 word story, “Mom’s Goodbye” was chosen as the winner of the 2016 Fiction Southeast Editor’s Prize. His stories are widely published in print and online in the following magazines amongst others: Connecticut Review, Raleigh Review, Other Voices, Litro, Playboy, Pank, Thrice Fiction and Literary Orphans. His is the author of two collections of short stories: “Come! Meet My Family and other stories” and “Peek.” Paul’s story, “Brother Speak” was selected to be in the new Norton Anthology of Micro-fiction due out in 2018.
