Music: GuitarTownCT presents Twisted Pine Fri., Dec. 8, at 7:30 PM

GuitarTownCT Concert Series presents the Boston-based string band Twisted Pine on Friday, Dec. 8. The show is at 7:30 PM and tickets are $20, available through the GuitarTownCT Web site.

Full of energy and surprise, wit and subtlety, the quartet Twisted Pine has quickly become one of the most acclaimed young string bands in the Northeast. Audiences across the US and the UK have been drawn to their forthright songwriting, lush harmonies, musical daring, and “charismatic appeal,” to quote Grammy-winner Alison Brown.

The group features Dan Bui (Mandolin), Kathleen Parks (Fiddle & Vocals), Chris Sartori (Bass) and Rachel Sumner (Guitar & Vocals).

In its early days, Twisted Pine hewed pretty close to their bluegrass origins, but over time the band has developed a unique, infectious, joyful noise without limits, bringing the enveloping sound and pop hooks of indie music to an acoustic instrumental setting. While it’s easy to celebrate each of the band members individually, Twisted Pine is also a unit that grooves together. Intricate arrangements of swelling, syncopated rhythm and precise instrumental interplay generate something big and vital: a thick landscape of sound built on an organic acoustic foundation.

Winners of the 2014 Freshgrass band competition and finalists at the 2015 Rockygrass contest, Twisted Pine has played major events from Greyfox to Green River to Glasgow’s Celtic Connections and beyond. “Their live show is already legendary for the band’s unbridled spirit and contagious energy,” says Jim Olsen, president of the innovative folk label Signature Sounds.

Check out Twisted Pine and see why Olsen calls it “the most exciting new roots band to emerge from the New England scene in quite some time.”

Music: String band folk from Flint Ladder Fri., Sept. 29

Flint Ladder plays Best Video Performance Space on Friday, Sept. 29. The show starts at 8 PM and the cover is $5.

Flint Ladder grew out of the creative, environmentally-conscious New Haven arts community in the late 1980s. During that time, a community member offered the use of his barn to form a home for a neighborhood circus. Cellist Shula Weinstein was one of the first members of the accompanying circus band. Shortly after, guitarist Frank Panzarella joined. Bassist Jim Baldoni was soon recruited by Panzarella. Anne Cherry, another community member, joined on fiddle, glockenspiel, and various percussion. The band would meet and create supporting accompaniment, gag tunes, improvisational flights of fancy and more. Lots of fun was had!

The circus produced 2 shows a year and had a run of this for 10 years! It was called The Flint Ladder Circus because the barn had previously housed The Flint Ladder Company. After the circus, the band continued performing, shortening its name from The Flint Ladder Circus Band to simply Flint Ladder. Along the way, they picked up mandolinist Karen Hogg via a random yoga class that Baldoni attended. Today, Flint Ladder is an eclectic, fun string band that specializes in unique arrangements of old jazz, folk, classic rock, country, and other popular tunes.

Music: Dudley Farm String Band plays bluegrass Fri., Feb. 13, at 8 PM

Dudley Farm String Band plays the Best Video Performance Space on Friday, Feb. 13. The music starts at 8 PM and the cover is $5.

While they have roots in bluegrass, Dudley Farm String Band brings together bluegrass, traditional and progressive styles. You might hear them playing old-timey standards one minute, and progressive folk or rock-‘n-roll sets the next. They have a great time when they play together, and it shows.

They pull tunes and styles from the likes of Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, The Soggy Bottom Boys (from “O Brother Where Art Thou?”), Doc Watson, Bela Fleck, Pink Floyd, Irving Berlin, Jerry Garcia and David Grisman. The group has also developed a substantial collection of original tunes.

The five band members play a range of folk instruments: Mat Crowley – mandolin; Irv Hagwood – banjo; Stan Hershonic – resonator slide guitar, mandolin, banjolin and harmonica; Mike Sinclair – bass and harmonica; and Brian Young – guitar, banjo and bass. They all sing from time to time, with Brian, Mat and Stan most often featured.

They’ve played in venues around the state, including: The Podunk Bluegrass Festival, East Hartford, CT; Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven; Medad Stone Tavern Museum, Guilford; Madison Historical Society and Bauer Park, Madison, CT; Night of a Thousand Stars (Guilford Free Library); North Branford Library; The International Festival of Arts & Ideas, New Haven, CT; The Durham Fair, and, of course, performances at Dudley Farm. Dudley Farm String Band also recorded traditional music for the soundtrack of a Dudley Farm video showing a recent barn-raising at the farm.
