Music: Songwriters in the Round: Jon Schlesinger, Bop Tweedie, Christopher Bousquet, Lys Guillorn (Just Added!) Thurs., Aug. 23

The singer-songwriters Jon Schlesinger, Bop Tweedie, Christopher Bousquet and Lys Guillorn (just added!) trade off tunes in the round at Best Video Performance Space on Thursday, Aug. 23. The show starts at 7:30 PM and the cover is $5.

Jon Schlesinger is the principal singer/songwriter for Connecticut-based No Line North. No Line North’s broad influences and instrumentation work their way into a uniquely unified sound that runs the spectrum from distorted garage rock to orchestral quiet folk. Incorporating violin, loop pedals, vibraphones, distorted guitars and a driving rhythm section, NLN cultivates sizzling, psychedelic folk rock rooted in sonic fields of love.

Bop Tweedie has played in a lot of New Haven bands—23 Hello, Media Circus, Chronicles Of DAISY, Bop Tweedie and the Days—but now describes himself (on his musician Facebook page) as “your typical singer/songwriter type.” These days he is performing his rockesque songs as a solo acoustic guitar singer/songwriter. His songs are “vaguely autobiographical.” Tweedie’s influences are all over the place and always have been. “Classical, opera, rock, jazz, world music—chances are if it’s out there, I’ve listened to it,” he says.

Christopher Bousquet is singer-songwriter from Connecticut. He is the former leader of the internationally acclaimed High Lonesome Plains, and as well as the widely regarded Alligator Farmhouse. He has performed with such luminaries as Roger McGuinn, Miracle Legion, John Sebastian, Asleep at the Wheel, The Nields, Mark Mulcahy, The Turtles, Tim Easton, J. Geils, and Susan Cowsill. From 2004 to 2007 Chris toured the Northeast as part of the “Times Three Tour” with songwriters Frank Critelli and Mr. Ray Neal (Miracle Legion, Vic Chesnutt).

Chris released a free, solo EP entitled “Ulmus Americana” in 2008. In 2010, his song “Alone on a Wire” was included on the “Not Before My Time” compilation.

Lys Guillorn is a singer/songwriter of the same musical school as Laura Veirs and Kristin Hersh, with a little Emmylou Harris thrown in: dreamy, lyric-driven, melodically interesting, and indefinable. She makes “oddly uplifting, folk, blues, country-infused, acoustic semi-electric psychedelic dark pop music.” (Geraint Jones, Comes With a Smile, UK). In recent years, Guillorn has released a full-length CD, an EP, and a collection of compilation tracks on her own Little Cowgirl Records. She released her second full-length CD of original material, “Winged Victory,” in November, 2013.
