Prof. Mark Schenker launches lecture series on four decades of Hitchcock with “The 39 Steps” Sun., June 24, 2 PM

In this sixth installment of his series “How to Read A Film,” Mark Schenker of Yale College presents four lectures on “Four Decades of Hitchcock.” All four lectures will be held on consecutive Sunday afternoons at 2 PM, starting on Sunday, June 24. Admission to each lecture is $7. The series kicks off with Hitchcock’s 1935 movie “The 39 Steps.”

Reservations are highly recommended.

Mark Schenker’s lectures are accompanied by clips from the films to illustrate the points he is making. His previous lectures on the films of Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, and Billy Wilder (among others) and the historical context in which the TV series “Downton Abbey” took place were erudite and entertaining.

Hitchcock’s “The 39 Steps,” released in 1935, is a legendary espionage thriller. Based on a book by John Buchan, it stars Robert Donat as Richard Hannay, a Canadian staying in London who is accused of murder and ensnared in a web of intrigue. Screenwriter Robert Towne, famous for Roman Polanski’s “Chinatown” said, “It’s not much of an exaggeration to say that all contemporary escapist entertainment begins with ‘The 39 Steps.’”

In a 2012 New Yorker article by Michael Sragow, Towne elaborated:

“I think it’s interesting,” he said, “Because most ‘pure’ movie thrillers, especially when you think of Hitchcock, are either fantasies fulfilled or anxieties purged. ‘The 39 Steps’ is one of the few, if not the only one, that does both at the same time. He puts you into this paranoid fantasy of being accused of murder and being shackled to a beautiful girl—of escaping from all kinds of harm, and at the same time trying to save your country, really. A Hitchcock film like ‘Psycho’ is strictly an anxiety purge. ‘The 39 Steps’ gives you that and the fantasy fulfilled. It’s kind of a neat trick, really.”
