Film Screening: “HEAD,” a live-action, all-puppet horror film Fri., Aug. 28, at 8 PM

Best Video Performance Space screens “HEAD,” a Connecticut-produced all-puppet horror movie on Friday, Aug. 28. The program starts at 8 PM and admission is $5.

Headblogposterimage_Web

“HEAD” is a one of a kind film starring an all puppet cast in a throwback to the slasher films of the 70’s and 80’s. A group of twenty somethings go for a nice fall weekend camping trip and end up in the middle of nightmare they may never escape from…

“HEAD” is Rated R, for gore, horror, four letter words and anything else you’d expect in a horror movie starring puppets, so we advise leaving the kids at home!

Check out the teaser trailer for “HEAD”:

Music: Patrick Dalton with Mike Skaggs, Mike Kusek on Thurs., Aug. 27, at 8 PM

Rootsy singer-songwriter Patrick Dalton, joined on upright bass by Mike Skaggs, plays Best Video Performance Space on Thursday, Aug. 27. Mike Kusek opens with a solo set. The show starts at 8 PM and there is a $5 cover.

Patrick Dalton

Patrick Dalton

Patrick Dalton is something of a musical encyclopedia. Ask him to play Metallica’s”Master of Puppets” and he will oblige, then he’ll follow up with Paul Simon’s “Graceland” and “Pursuit of Happiness” by Kid Cudi. Dalton doesn’t simply play guitar or write songs, he absorbs music, breathes it in, digests it and assimilates it.

Dalton’s own music, while strikingly original and nuanced, has a familiarity to it—there’s Delta blues in his studied finger picking, folk and hip hop in his storied lyrics and powerful, breathy voice, big band in his trumpet playing, and classic American songwriting in his melodies. His songs come to terms with everything from death to macro-politics to economics, and while his subject matter may be heavy at times, Dalton’s songs leave you pensive rather than downtrodden, interested rather than pessimistic.

Dalton has lent his talents as both musician and sound engineer to many musical projects, including The Proud Flesh, Sidewalk Dave, Elison Jackson, Ports of Spain, and Ceschi. His flair for dynamics and arrangement is evident in his work as both producer and singer-songwriter, and his collaborations within the New England music scene only serves to expand his musical encyclopedia, volume by volume.

Mike Kusek

Mike Kusek

Michael Kusek is a New Haven based singer songwriter who plays guitar in the groups 10,000 Blades and Bilge Rat. Kusek’s solo material, while still being guitar based, is much more ambient, sometimes gentle, while exploring darker, even sinister tones and themes.

Music: Lys Guillorn Band, Calvin DeCutlass live Thurs., Aug. 20, at 8 PM

Lys_Guillorn_BV_021215_02_WebLys Guillorn & Her Band play the Best Video Performance Space on Thursday, Aug. 20. Calvin DeCutlass opens. The cover charge is $5 and the music starts at 8 PM.

Lys Guillorn is a singer/songwriter of the same musical school as Laura Veirs and Kristin Hersh, with a little Emmylou Harris thrown in: dreamy, lyric-driven, melodically interesting, and indefinable.  She makes “oddly uplifting, folk, blues, country-infused, acoustic semi-electric psychedelic dark pop music.” (Geraint Jones, Comes With a Smile, UK). In recent years, Guillorn has released a full-length CD, an EP, and a collection of compilation tracks on her own Little Cowgirl Records. She released her second full-length CD of original material, “Winged Victory,” in November, 2013.

Chip McCabe reviewed her album on CTNow.com, writing:

She comes at the listener not only with a full band  in tow, but also with a cavalcade of guest musicians and a litany of her own instruments, each of which she’s extremely adept at. On this album Guillorn’s brand of folksy Americana is drenched in 60’s pop harmonies and an indie rock aesthetic. While she’s not afraid to bust out the lap steel, she’s also not afraid to incorporate the occasional cello accompaniment or horn section. It’s an album that’s pretty indicative of an artist who’s spent time floating in and out of varying genres for the last few years and coming back home to incorporate some of that into her own work. Again, positive musical experiences meeting with raw talent on wide open display here.

Calvin DeCutlass emerged as a singer-songwriter and guitarist in the New Haven scene during the early aughts with his bands The Tires and The Nortons (with local legend James Velvet and Johnny Java). He plays what Patrick Ferrucci of the New Haven Register called “intelligent, country-tinged folk rock” and he once tried out for the New Haven Cutters.

Music; The Walkingwood Mandolin Quartet play Wed., Aug. 19, at 8 PM

wmq_WebThe Walkingwood Mandolin Quartet make their Best Video Performance Space debut on Wednesday, Aug. 19. The show starts at 8 PM and the cover is $5.

The Walkingwood Mandolin Quartet (WMQ) was founded at the turn of the century to apply the quartetto classico version of the mandolin quartet to a completely new repertoire. Whatever your preconceptions are about what a mandolin quartet is like, forget them.

The current and founding, members of WMQ are: Ellen Cohn, mandolin; Colin Healy, mandola; Betsy Rome, mandolin; and Gary Wikfors, mandocello. “Walkingwood” is the name given the home of mandocello player Gary Wikfors.

Gary had acquired a chronic itch to arrange music for mandolin quartet, and eventually a mandocello and mandola to do so. After experimenting with multitrack recordings, Gary felt the need to impose this affliction on some musical friends. Betsy likes to joke that this is the first band she was invited to join by email.

All WMQ members are playing out of their normal elements in this group: Betsy is a well-known flatpick guitarist anchoring the bluegrass-swing quartet “Too Blue,” Colin is a fiddler and multi-instrumentalist at the center of the “Ash Creek String Band,” Ellen is a sought-after accompaniest of traditional Irish and Quebecois tunes on piano and guitar, and Gary usually plays the wee-little mandolin with “The Fiddleheads” and others.

WMQ made its public debut in 1999 at the NOMAD festival in Newtown, CT. Since then, we have played other folk and traditional-music festivals, coffeehouses, concerts, apple orchards and private events.

Their influences? Not classical. Motown, TV themes, surf, O’Carolan, hard rock, traditional Swedish… A common response is “I can’t believe you can play that on mandolins!”

The Furors

Comprised of guitarist Derek Holcomb and drummer Tom Dans—Holcomb sings lead and Dans harmonizes—The Furors have been playing together for over three decades. They have self-released numerous vinyl 45s, a vinyl LP and several compact discs. Their catalog is so beloved among local musicians that a tribute album, “Let’s Get Furious,” was released in 2003 featuring 38 Furors songs covered by 38 local musicians and groups.

The Furors’ music is joyful, quirky three-minute pop, like a cross between They Might Be Giants and early British Invasion rock ‘n’ roll.

Music: Zoo Front, Bill Arnold Thurs., Aug. 5, at 8 PM

The indie rock group Zoo Front and singer-songwriter Bill Arnold play Best Video Performance Space on Thursday, Aug. 5. The music starts at 8 PM and the cover is $5.

The last year has been a busy one for Zoo Front. The new CD Red Stereo Dress is the beginning of a new era for the band, with Nancie Tief making her singing and songwriting debut. Adding to the fun, we adopted a new working philosophy we call ABM – “ambient background mischief”. The idea is to add a subliminal track to each song that somehow fills out the sound in a way that defies definition. We hope you like the results.

Bill Arnold played guitar and wrote songs for The Wall Spiders for much of the 90’s. He is currently a singer and strings player for The Rude Mechanicals while he writes for theatre and film, including an upcoming film of his play, “Night of the Musical Dead.”
