Music: DIY/Experimental music with Painted Faces & Ryan Kayhart, Id M Theft able on Thurs., July 28

Painted_Faces_Ryan_Karhart_Id_M_Theft_Able_composite_WebAdventurous experimental musicians Painted Faces & Ryan Kayhart along with solo artist Id M Theft Able play Best Video Performance Space on Thursday, July 28. The show starts st 8 PM and the cover is $5.

Ryan Kayhart of Worcester, MA and Painted Faces (D.Drucker) of Brooklyn, NY are hitting the road to end all roads together. The uniting of two great (destructively creative) minds/ambassadors from the fringes of home recording. Weirdnesses/creators of worlds, coming together to rock. Guitar solos will occur. Painted Faces is the solo recording project of artist/musician David Drucker born in Miami, Florida. He has assembled various bands to play live shows over the last few years around Florida and has recently moved to Brooklyn, NY (from Tallahassee where he has fostered his sound over the past few years) to pursue his visions further and expose his music to a wider audience.

Join Maine’s experimental, found art specializing, dumpster diving, gentle goofball id m theft able in a performance of odd art, odd artistic vision and odd lack thereof, and being an odd artist in general—appropriate for anyone who feels isolated by seeing odd things in the odd world around them and wondering how to incorporate them in their odd medium of choice.

Music: Guitar-based folk by Trevor Healy & Jason Labbe, Chuck Johnson Mon., Mar. 28

Best Video Performance Space presents a rare Monday music show on Mar. 28 when a couple of out-of-state guitarists drop by the room for sets. Easthampton, MA-based guitarist Trevor Healy—with Jason Labbe accompanying him on drums—and Oakland, CA-based guitarist Chuck Johnson play at 8 PM. The cover is $5.

Trevor_Healy_Web

Trevor Healy

Trevor Healy is accompanied by Jason Labbe on drums. They will perform various pieces from their 15-year history playing together, focusing on songs from Healy’s recently finished album of instrumentals.

Healy is a luthier and guitarist based in Easthampton, MA. A life-long musician, he has also devoted his life to instrument making since graduating from the Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery in 1999. He went on to work with guitar maker Roger Sadowsky in Brooklyn, NY and in the repair shop of Gary Brawer in San Francisco, CA.

Through these experiences, Healy gained the knowledge and skills necessary to start his own shop. In 2011 he founded Healy Guitars and now builds his own line of acoustic and electric guitars, and performs all types of repair work for local and touring musicians.

Healy came up playing Irish music at a local pub with his parents. His father was his first guitar teacher and introduced him to DADGAD tuning. Healy went on to study classical guitar at Skidmore College with Joel Brown. Healy’s varied influences include Fugazi, Lou Harrison, Ravi Shankar, and John Fahey.

During his time in San Francisco, he was one half of the duo Meridians, which employed intricate electric, acoustic, and 12-string guitar melodies over pulsing loops of flute, violin, found objects and oscillators. In 2010, his track “Wrapped in Water” was included on the Tompkins Square release “Beyond Berkeley Guitar”, a collection of music from Bay Area fingerstyle guitarists compiled by Sean Smith. Healy recently recorded a collection of solo compositions to be released later this year. The music is performed on 6 and 12 string guitars that he made.

Chuck Johnson

Chuck Johnson

Chuck Johnson is a composer and musician residing in Oakland, CA. He approaches his work with an ear towards finding faults and instabilities that might reveal latent beauty, with a focus on guitar, experimental electronics, and minimalist composition. Recordings of his work have been published by Strange Attractors Audio House, Communion, Amish, Merge, Umbrella, Phaserprone, Squealer and Three Lobed.

Johnson has performed with Eugene Chadbourne, Frank Gratkowsi, Peter Kowald, Miya Masaoka, and Pauline Oliveros, among others. He has performed at the Hopscotch Music Festival (Raleigh, NC), Debacle Fest (Seattle), the San Francisco Electronic Music Festival, Siren Fest (New York), BENT (New York), theFestival of New American Music (Sacramento), Music for People and Thingamajigs (San Francisco), and the San Francisco International Film Festival. Johnson’s credits as a film composer include scores for the HBO documentary Private Violence and the popular PBS show A Chef’s Life.  In 2009 he received an MFA in Electronic Music and Intermedia Art from Mills College.

Nick Di Maria

Nick Di Maria

A graduate of Western Connecticut State University, Nick Di Maria holds a Bachelor’s in Jazz Performance studying under Eddie Henderson, Dave Scott, Jeremy Pelt, Taylor Ho Bynum and Rich Clymer. Nick began playing music at age 10 and over the years has played in multiple genres from jazz to reggae to classical to punk. In 2006 upon graduating from college, Nick assembled his first working quartet. From the beginning the band began working the CT jazz scene playing all over the state, including a residency in Newtown in the summer of 2006.

For this show, Di Maria is planning on playing solo trumpet under the name Zero Dollar: Solo. In an email, Di Maria wrote, “Its pretty avant garde a la Nate Wooley/Taylor Ho Bynum.

The Forest Room

The Forest Room

The Forest Room is the acoustic solo project by Matt Streit which began in 2004 as a casual musical outlet outside of his main band. An active musician from Milford, CT for many years, mainly as a bass player in heavy metal and rock bands, Matt takes a completely different approach with the Forest Room by writing most of the music on acoustic guitar, utilizing multiple layers of guitar parts with live record looping, and occasionally incorporating produced beats. Matt uses several guitar effects pedals, some of which he built himself. The Forest Room combines influences and elements of instrumental, folk, ambient, hiphop, and triphop music.

Music: Light Upon Blight, Human Flourishing to offer experimental music Thurs., Mar. 10

Experimental music groups Human Flourishing and Light Upon Blight play Best Video Performance Space on Thursday, Mar. 10. The music starts at 8 PM and there is a $5 cover.

Human Flourishing

Human Flourishing

Human Flourishing—featuring Connor Pereault and Gregory Paul—explores the spiritual connectivity between people through the creation of tense sound environments in a variety of spaces. Whether located in an abandoned farm structure or a New York gallery, the audience is encapsulated by the experience happening before them; transforming the surroundings into an ethereal or satanical plane. Human Flourishing’s experimental sound horizons encourage inner reflection and spiritual connectivity to a world that seems isolated and cold.

The resulting music is a celebration of fellow feeling. It’s about embracing uncertainty, loving a friend’s weirdness, exploring mistakes, and exorcising demons. The music has been called goopcore, and electronic primitivism, and worse. Their improvisations flow from harsh electronic noise to gentle acoustic strummings and back, held aloft by otherworldly ambient textures and/or simple vocal harmonies.

Light Upon Blight

Light Upon Blight

Much like volcanic eruptions, Light Upon Blight—led by guitarist Jeff Cedrone—performances are uncompromising acts of spontaneous destruction and creation. Purging and destroying the old while simultaneously laying new, fertile ground. No two Light Upon Blight performances are ever the same, just as nature intended. Sounds like: Free Jazz with a noise aesthetic or an exorcism.

Colorguard will perform a short opening set. Colorguard’s most recent casette release is described thusly on the Elm Recordings Web site: “Hauntingly minimalistic improvisations from New Haven guitarist (Mountain Movers, Medication) and noise-maker Kryssi Battalene. On this release she works with a prepared turntable to create both harshly distorted and keenly melodic record loops that are as beatiful as they are unrecognizable from their source material.”
