Music: Buzz Gordo (aka Gary Mezzi), The Tommys play roots music, rock ‘n’ roll Wed., Aug. 15

The Tommys and Buzz Gordo will each play sets of American roots music and rock ‘n’ roll on Wednesday, Aug. 15. The show starts at 8 PM and the cover is $5.

Buzz Gordo, a/k/a Gary Mezzi, is the guitarist, singer songwriter for New Haven’s Bronson Rock, a band which combines straightforward roots rock with a garage/soul feel that has been compared to Graham Parker and the Rumour. He is also remembered by many as the guitarist and songwriter for New Haven roots-rockabilly institutions Big Bad Johns and their immediate predecessor Gone Native. For this show, Gordo will be accompsnied on percussion by Bronson Rock bandmate Tom Smith.

Mezzi’s BBJ songs have garnered numerous TV and movie credits, including HBO’s Divorce and True Blood (which featured his songs in three separate episodes), 90210, Heartland, the movie The Two Ninas, and many others. Hartford Courant theater critic Christopher Arnott included Gone Native in his list of the “20 Most Important Bands in New Haven Music History,” while Indyweek.com named Gordo’s song “Smokin’ Joe” as one of the five best songs about boxing. Gordo has also worked with Blue Man Group as a comedy writer, co-led a NYC band with Matt Verta-Ray (of Jon Spencer’s Heavy Trash), and appeared on MTV and Canada’s Much Music as lead guitarist for British singer Louderman.

The Tommys features Tom Hearn on guitar and vocals backed up by Tom Smith (pulling double duty this evening) on percussion. Hearn is best known as the front man of rockabilly group Big Fat Combo. A photographer, Hearn has had several gallery shows of his iconic pictures taken during the early years of punk rock. Tom Smith plays for many roots and blues groups (Cobalt Rhythm Kings, The Bandidos, The Hickups) as well as psychedelic pop band Happy Ending.

Music: Bronson Rock plays roots rock Fri., Jan. 27

Roots rock quartet Bronson Rock, led by songwriter Gary Mezzi, plays Best Video Performance Space on Friday, January 27. The show starts at 8 PM and the cover is $5.

Bronson Rock is a four piece rock and soul band featuring Buzz Gordo (aka Gary Mezzi) on guitar and lead vocals, Eric Bloomquist on bass, Lou St. John on organ, and Tom Smith on drums.  Individually, the seasoned musicians in Bronson Rock have performed with a “who’s-who” of Connecticut artists, and continue to maintain busy schedules as players. The band featured the songwriting talents of Gordo, who was the main songwriter for New Haven’s illustrious Big Bad Johns. Two of his songs from those days have been featured in a recent season of HBO’s True Blood.

The band plays a tight, danceable mix of original garage soul sounds, with some choice obscure covers thrown in, owing a debt to groups like the Rascals and Booker T. and the MG’s.

Music: The Sawtelles “Brown” CD release this Fri., Dec. 2, with Hank Hoffman opening

The Sawtelles play Best Video Performance Space on Friday, Dec. 2, a CD release show for their 11th self-produced CD, “Brown.” The disc is so named because it features prominent guitar and sax contributions by recent Sawtelles compatriot Richard Brown, also the general manager of Best Video Film & Cultural Center. BVFCC Program Director Hank Hoffman opens with a solo acoustic set. The show starts at 8 PM and the cover is $5.

The Sawtelles

The music of husband and wife duo the Sawtelles is a balance of four elements: alternate-tuned guitar, stand-up drum kit (ala Velvet Underground’s Mo Tucker) and two voices. Sparse but intricately arranged pop that is as lush as it is threadbare makes what is played as important as what isn’t. Peter plays guitar and Julie plays drums; they both sing. Their sparse but intricately arranged pop is as lush as it is captivatingly unique. Over the past year, they have added a new texture to their palette with the addition of guitarist and saxophonist Richard Brown.

Their self-produced DYI philosophy aligns them more with the hand painted Sun Ra LP’s of 1950’s and 60’s then it does with those striving for mainstream commercial success.

Hank Hoffman

Hank Hoffman has been writing songs for and playing guitar and singing in the psychedelic and folk rock band Happy Ending—often with Richard Brown—since 1983. For this show, Hoffman will be playing solo acoustic guitar for his whole set with the exception of a final tune where he will be joined by Bronson Rock leader Gary Mezzi on guitar and harp.
