Music: Indie & hip-hop with 5 acts on Sun., July 24, at 6 PM

Indie_hip_hop_show_072416_WebIt’s an indie rock and hip-hop spectacular on Sunday, July 24, at Best Video Performance Space. Running Laps & Nathan Corp headline, supported by In Response, Chef the Chef, The Forest Room, and Zak G. Doors are at 6 PM and the cover is $5.

Running Laps & Nathan Corp offer up gritty-sounding noise punk rap-infused performance art presented with a corporate theme drawing from science fiction and dystopian concepts.

In Response approaches a mixture of indie rock and emo from a harder-edged perspective than most of their peers. In doing so, they’ve managed to carve out their own unique space within a highly saturated genre. Their songs are often both delicate and abrasive, displaying strong control over dynamics and nuance. Hayes’ vocals are pensive and somber, sporting a somewhat melancholy delivery, not unlike alt-rock legends Radiohead. But every so often, Hayes’ voice soars into an intense growl, bearing an emotional intensity reminiscent of Modern Life Is War and The Hope Conspiracy.

From hip-hop blog OK-Tho: “Connecticut underground beast on the rise Chef (pronounced like Keff) the Chef just dropped the 3 track Friends EP for us to enjoy. The Friends EP features appearances by his alias Heart Eyes and Fedo. Put it on and rock it for your many friends. I predict this MC/Producer has a lot of great work ahead of him.”

The Forest Room is the acoustic solo project by Matt Streit which began in 2004 as a casual musical outlet outside of his main band. An active musician from Milford, CT for many years, mainly as a bass player in heavy metal and rock bands, Matt takes a completely different approach with the Forest Room by writing most of the music on acoustic guitar, utilizing multiple layers of guitar parts with live record looping, and occasionally incorporating produced beats. Matt uses several guitar effects pedals, some of which he built himself. The Forest Room combines influences and elements of instrumental, folk, ambient, hiphop, and triphop music.

Zak G is a rapper, producer, illustrator, and viking warlord from Connecticut. Prone to sway on the grittier and noisier side of things, both his music and artwork conjure up bleak yet sarcastic post apocalyptic imagery. His beats are just as influenced by punk and industrial as they are by Def Jux era hip hop, and his rapping aggressive, cynical, and often times abstract.

Music: Intense singer-songwriters Shaun Bowen and Kevin MF King on Thurs., July 23, at 8 PM

Singer-songwriters Shaun Bowen and Kevin MF King perform at Best Video on Thursday, July 23. The intensity starts at 8 PM and doesn’t let up for two sets. The cover is $5.

Shaun Bowen singer songwriter guitarist in long running heavy rock New Haven band Murdervan is also a solo performer with a style that separates him from most folk and acoustic acts. With just a beat up 1970s cheap  acoustic  guitar Bowen writes and plays songs in his solo act that are both driving and melodic and grounded by well-crafted pop hooks. He tends to strum the guitar very hard at times trying to fill the room with a big sound of open strings and lavish chordal voicings. Shaun is currently working on his debut record to be released sometime in early fall and continues to be seen live throughout the New England area.

Kevin MF King’s songs run amok with topics such as work drudgery, self-reflection, escapism, the debauchery displayed in modern politics and the process of human interaction, at times using fictional folk tales to tell a story, others just beautiful instrumentals. KMFK has more than 100 self-recorded songs regularly distributed on self-released hand-stamped CDs.

Music: Playfight performs Wed., Oct. 22, at 8 PM

Playfight_WebPlayfight performs at the Best Video Performance Space on Wednesday, Oct. 22. The music starts at 8 PM and the cover is $5.

PlayFight is a new indie-pop duet from New Haven, CT, featuring Sara-Joy and Lamont. They will be releasing their first single STREAMS in October of 2014.

Their original music is somewhat A.D.D allowing them to keep listener’s attention. Some songs would fit seamlessly into an old black and white movie, others are more energetic and playful, while their mid-tempo songs tend to be relaxed and would fit nicely onto a vacation or summer mix.

Through lyric and sound, they seek to transcend the unimaginative and get the audience singing and dancing—feeling alive and free to let go. They may then shift to a more serious or melancholy topic, one that is equally moving in a completely different way. Lamont’s humanitarian and environmental pursuits paired with Sara-Joy’s deep desire to connect with others makes them a loving force on and of the stage. They are not to be missed.

Milksop: Unsung play the Best Video Performance Space on Thurs., Jan. 30. The cover is $5 and the music starts a half-hour later than usual, at 8:30 PM.

What is “psycho-folk?” The best way to find out is to come to see and hear New Haven band Milksop: Unsung.  Members of the group are Dan Carrano (mandolin, acoustic guitar), T.J. Jackson (acoustic guitar, banjo), Gary Velush (upright bass) and Mike Paolucci (percussion). With that instrumentation, it should be no surprise that the band’s roots are in bluegrass and Americana. But they put their own 21st-century twisted twist on those forms.

Upon arriving back in CT, KMFK had a full live band called Kevin MF King & Death Valley Retreat, consisting of Derek Monahan on bass and Scotty-O (Mouth On Tailpipe) on drums. The trio played out often and recorded one album together, the “Death Valley Retreat” EP. In the summer of 2010 Scotty-O left the band and was replaced by Jason Musshorn (Beneath The Marrow) for a brief period. In October 2010 KMFK entered Silver Bullet Studios solo to record the song “Rope” with Greg Thomas (Misery Signals). In January 2011 KFMK traveled to Lawrence, Kan. to record another batch of demos and play a few shows. In May 2011 KMFK stopped performing solo to focus on the duo SEA with Broccoli Robb Park. Many shows, flyers and months later in October SEA recorded a 5 song ep “CHAIR” with Sgott MacKenzie (Ferocious Fucking Teeth). The group played its final show in December 2011.

The year 2012 was full of solo shows and in October KMFK recorded once again with Sgott MacKenzie, churning out the “Feral Kids” EP which was followed up in February 2013 by its sister ep “Bird Mask.”
