Swamp Yankee and Alexander perform Thursday, Feb. 4. The show—influenced by the “American Primitive” guitar stylings of artists like John Fahey—starts at 8 PM and the cover is $5.

Swamp Yankee aims to marry the guitar-as-orchestra model of John Fahey, James Blackshaw, and other American Primitive guitarists with an actual orchestral instrument– the cello. Taking cues from the experimental music that produced the likes of Daniel Bachman, Swamp Yankee focuses their instrumental work to the struggles and victories of small New England cities. As finger-picked, syncopated melodies played by Danhy Ravizza on guitar contrast against droning cellos played by John Longyear, Swamp Yankee paints the tale of land and love lost along the Thames river in their new EP, Kelo V. New London.

New England is often painted as quaint and bucolic paradise. Swamp Yankee aims to show the thorns of the rose that is New England.

In his American Primitive guitar persona Alexander, David Shapiro (Nagual, Glambats, Copper Blue) claws against common time and the droning ghosts of John Fahey and Jack Rose. (Shapiro previously played abstract electric guitar improvisations at BVFCC under the name Lituya Bay.)
