Music: CD release show for Jeff Fuller & Friends jazz trio Wed., June 29

Fuller_1_WebThe jazz group Jeff Fuller & Friends plays the Best Video Performance Space on Wednesday, June 29. The music starts at 8 PM and the cover is $5.

The event celebrates the release of the new CD “Shoreline Blues” by Fuller’s jazz trio, Jeff Fuller & Friends. Bassist Fuller is joined by Darren Litzie on piano and Ben Bilello on drums.

Whether performing on stage and in clubs, teaching jazz and coaching ensembles, or composing and arranging in his home studio, Jeff Fuller brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to all his musical endeavors.

An integral part of the Connecticut, New York and international jazz scenes, Fuller toured worldwide and recorded with saxophonists Lou Donaldson and Paquito D’Rivera. He has played with jazz masters from all styles and eras including such diverse artists as Dizzy Gillespie, Mose Allison, “Papa” Jo Jones, Gerry Mulligan, and Clark Terry.

Fuller is one of the most sought after jazz bassists in Connecticut, and currently leads his own ensembles in many jazz venues. In September, 2014, he was awarded the annual Jazz Haven Award, “For all you have done in presenting and preserving the culture and music of jazz.”  Fuller plays the Upton Hawkes Hybrid double bass, and a Ken Smith 6-string bass guitar.

CD_Shoreline_Blues_coverimage

The history of the jazz piano/bass/drums trio is an encyclopedia of many volumes and entries. Remarkable bassist/composer Jeff Fuller’s new CD Shoreline Blues is an outstanding new contribution to that storied legacy, building upon the foundation he laid with his acclaimed 2015 release The Call From Within. The trio – called Jeff Fuller & Friends – was established in 2014 with pianist Darren Litzie and drummer Ben Bilello, and over that time has established that special level of synergy that results in seemingly telepathic interplay. That empathy is in full evidence on every track of Shoreline Blues.

Prof. Mark Schenker discusses Billy Wilder’s 1953 film “Stalag 17” on Sun., June 25, at 2 PM

In this third installment of his series “How to Read A Film,” Mark Schenker of Yale College presents four lectures on “The Films of Billy Wilder.” This week, Schenker focuses on “Stalag 17,” starring William Holden. Admission to each lecture is $7 and they begin at 2 PM.

Reservations are highly recommended.

stalag-17_Web

Mark has previously dissected “Double Indemnity” (1944) on June 12 and “Sunset Boulevard” (1950) on June 19. He will interrogate “Witness for the Prosecution” (1957) on July 10.

Mark Schenker’s lectures are accompanied by clips from the films to illustrate the points he is making. His previous lectures on the films of Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick and the historical context in which the TV series “Downton Abbey” took place were erudite and entertaining.

Writing in The New York Times in 1953, critic Bosley Crowther opined:

A cracker jack movie entertainment has been made from “Stalag 17,” the play by Donald Bevan and Edmund Trzcinski that scored on Broadway two years ago. Produced and directed by Billy Wilder for the greater glory of Paramount and played by an all-male cast of experts, sparked by William Holden, Harvey Lembeck and Robert Strauss, this film version of the comedy-drama of American airmen in a German prison camp becomes a humorous, suspenseful, disturbing and rousing pastime on the Astor’s screen.

Mark Schenker deconstructs Billy Wilder’s “Sunset Boulevard” Sun., 6/19, at 2 PM

Sunset Boulevard_04_WebIn this third installment of his series “How to Read A Film,” Mark Schenker of Yale College presents four lectures on “The Films of Billy Wilder.” This week, Schenker will deconstruct Wilder’s classic “Sunset Boulevard,” starring Gloria Swanson and William Holden. Admission to each lecture is $7 and they begin at 2 PM.

Reservations are highly recommended.

Mark will be discussing four Wilder films: “Double Indemnity” (1944) on June 12, “Sunset Boulevard” (1950) on June 19, “Stalag 17” (1953) on June 26, and “Witness for the Prosecution” (1957) on July 10.

Writing in The New York Times in 1950, Thomas Pryor declared:

Sunset Boulevard is by no means a rounded story of Hollywood, past or present. But it is such a clever compound of truth and legend—and is so richly redolent of the past, yet so contemporaneous—that it seemingly speaks with great authority. Sunset Boulevard is that rare blend of pungent writing, expert acting, masterly direction, and unobtrusively artistic photography which quickly casts a spell over an audience and holds it enthralled to a shattering climax.

Music: Lines West, Glenn Roth perform Fri., June 24, at 8 PM

Alt-country group Lines West and guitarist Glenn Roth will perform at Best Video Performance Space on Friday, June 24. The show starts at 8 PM and cover is $5.

Compared to Wilco and Big Star, Lines West feature a wide range of American rock traditions. Lines West is a four-piece group co-fronted by John Radzin on guitar and vocals and Brian Larney on keyboard, guitar, and vocals. Radzin and Larney formed Lines West in May 2013. “Stop Look and Listen,” their first record, was co-produced by Radzin and Larney (under their production moniker JAYBEE). Fueled by the songwriting tandem of Radzin and Larney, “Stop Look and Listen” is a unique blast of rootsy pop/rock described by Review Stalker as as “perfectly crafted pop songs that should be all over terrestrial radio at the very least.”

Lines West live at Best Video Performance Space in February, 2015.

Lines West live at Best Video Performance Space in February, 2015.

Glenn Roth is a fingerstyle guitarist, his thumb riding the bassline and the melody driving all. His compositions suggest multiple guitars, but it’s really just one guy, ten flying fingers, one instrument. All instrumental, Roth’s songs suggest moods and narratives that compel the listener to fill in the details.

Glenn Roth

Glenn Roth

Roth has released four CDs to date: Innovations (2005), Busker (2006), Into the Unknown (2010), and Welcome Home (2015). His original compositions have been hailed as “sheer virtuosity” (20th Century Guitar magazine) and “delicate, accomplished solo acoustic guitar work” (PLAY: New Haven Arts & Entertainment Weekly). Roth released a new “Another Dimension EP” in April of 2014.

Music: The Anne Marie Menta Band offers up great songs with great players Fri., June 17

Anne_Marie_Menta_Band_BVFCC_010816_WebSinger-songwriter Anne Marie Menta brings her band back to Best Video Performance Space Friday, June 17. The show starts at 8 PM and cover is $5.

Anne Marie Menta hails from New Haven, CT., where she has been a long time favorite singer/songwriter. She comes from a family of three brothers, where playing and listening to music was their great passion. Her musical credits include fronting various rock & roll, folk, and country bands as a singer/guitarist, including The Wanderers, Sugar Moon, Sky Riders, and Rodeo Radio. In the mid 90s, she decided to concentrate on her own original music, and those tunes of hers that she “snuck” into her cover band repertoire now became her main focus. But, the country, folk, and pop music that she loved continued to be an influence in her writing.

Anne Marie’s first two CDs of original music, “Untried & True” and “When the Love Ran Deep” were released in 1999 and 2004 to enthusiastic reviews and gained airplay throughout New England acoustic music programs. Her third CD, “Seven Secrets,” was released in late November 2009 and continues her lyrical and melodic style of songwriting, as well as collaborations with her producer and fellow songwriter and instrumentalist, Dick Neal. She has been a featured performer at the Eli Whitney Folk Festival in New Haven, CT. and opened for artists such as Richard Shindell, The Kennedys, and Eddie from Ohio. She was a finalist in the 2004 South Florida Folk Festival Singer/Songwriter competition, and a showcase artist at NERFA (New England Regional Folk Alliance.)

Words & Music: Music: Franz Douskey & Rich Moran present Part 3 of their Tribute to Frank Sinatra Thurs., June 9

Rich Moran, left, and Franz Douskey, right

The life and times of Frank Sinatra come alive on an evening of stories and songs presented by Franz Douskey, author of Sinatra and Me: The Very Good Years,  and vocalist Rich Moran at Best Video on Thursday, June 9, at 8 PM. The cover is $5. This will be their third time presenting a Sinatra program at Best Video Film & Cultural Center.

Sinatra and Me: The Very Good Years features the recollections of New Haven native and Sally’s Pizza co-founder, Tony Consiglio, who met fellow teenager, Frank Sinatra, while visiting family and spending time on the streets of Hoboken, New Jersey in the early 1930’s. They formed a fast and true friendship that lasted until Sinatra’s death in 1998. Consiglio was not only Sinatra’s friend, he served as his confident, valet, and true “right hand man” for many years. From the early days when Sinatra was trying to establish himself as a singer to the mid 1960’s, Tony worked with Sinatra and was there to share the highs and lows of his career.

After rebuffing many requests for interviews about his relationship with Sinatra through the years, Tony was introduced by a family member to local author, Franz Douskey when he was in his 80’s. Tony hit it off with Franz and eventually began sharing the fond remembrances of his life with Sinatra. Franz compiled the tales he heard into the book, “Sinatra and Me…The Very Good Years”, an “as told to” memoir published in 2012.

At this event, Franz will share Tony’s stories from the book as well as his own insights on the life and career of Francis Albert Sinatra. In between anecdotes, vocalist Rich Moran will perform a number of classic Sinatra tunes back by pianist Judy Webber, saxophonist Jeff Webber, and drummer Noah Golden.

Franz is a Pulitzer Prize author who has been published in over 200 hundred publications including The New Yorker and Rolling Stone. He also co-produced and co—hosted, Once Upon a Bandstand on WQUN featuring the music of Frank Sinatra and many others of his era.

Rich has performed at Best Video on several occasions, each time bringing his neo-traditional interpretation to a different part of the Standards repertoire. Together with the Webbers, he has played venues throughout southern Connecticut. Their most recent concert set titled, “Here’s To the Ladies Who Rhyme” was performed at the Guilford Concert Under the Stars series and Best Video this summer.

Since meeting, Franz and Rich have enjoyed sharing their mutual appreciation for the Great American Songbook and the singers who have put their stamp on the genre including Frank Sinatra. They look forward to presenting what they hope will be an informative and entertaining evening for all who attend.
