Scott’s Times review: “Viewers familiar with [director Aki] Kaurismaki’s other work [which includes ‘The Man Without a Past,’ ‘Juha’ and ‘Leningrad Cowboys Go America’] will instantly recognize the hallmarks of his style. Those new to the filmmaker may need a few scenes to adjust to the look, feel and rhythm of his world. His approach is old-fashioned. ‘The Other Side of Hope’ has the stately pace and graceful precision of a movie from the 1930s, and democratic, anti-authoritarian politics that also evoke that era. This is less a matter of nostalgia than of aesthetic commitment.
