Music: Original funky jazz from Bamjam Thurs., July 19

A new jazz trio, Bamjam, play Best Video Performance Space on Thursday, July 19. The show starts at 8 PM and the cover is $10.

Bamjam is a vehicle for guitarist Michael Coppola’s “original, funky bluesy jazz tunes.” The music draws elements of Jazz, Blues, and Funk, with groove being laid down by Steve Clarke on bass and Chris Lyons on drums.

Coppola, who leads an open jazz jam each month at Café Nine will be demonstrating a whole other side of his playing, much more in the realm of Jeff Beck music, rather than the straight ahead jazz one would expect to hear from him. He riffs on 9-string guitar with distortion; it’s not to be missed.

Chris Lyons cut his musical teeth as a teen under the tutelage of Guitar George Baker, who recognized the innate groove in this young drummer. Chris went on to play with greats such as Mark Egan, Jeff Andrews and many more. Steve Clarke has been the most in demand electric bassist in Southern CT for years. Known for his funk and jazz chops, Steve has performed at numerous festivals and venues worldwide, with the likes of Mike Stern and Laco Deczi as well as R&B artists such as The Drifters, Mary Wells and the Coasters.

Michael Coppola has performed at venues such as the Montreal Jazz festival and the Namm show, as well as well known NYC clubs such as the Blue Note, The Iridium and Knickerbocker. He has played with artists such as Les Paul, Tommy Emmanuel.

Music: Jazz vocal & guitar with Michael Coppola and Faye Green Thurs., May 31

Virtuoso jazz guitarist Michael Coppola and vocalist Faye Green play Best Video Performance Space Thursday, May 31. The show starts at 8 PM and the cover is $5.

Sultry vocals, tireless stage energy and the ability to bring down the house with steamy jazz, blues and R&B. That’s who Faye Green is. She has been entertaining crowds in the New Haven area for over 30 years. During that time she has also been on the road opening for national acts such as The Average White Band, Melba Moore, Tower of Power and Tavaras. You may have also seen her in the city at many New York clubs including The Apollo Theater and Nell Carter’s. Faye has been voted Best Jazz Vocalist by The New Haven Advocate numerous times. Her various duos and groups, most notably “Faye and the Funky Allstars” have been voted Best Group several times over the years. These days, Faye Green has been travelling all over Connecticut with guitarist Mike Coppolla and entertaining crowds with everything from Etta James to covers of some of your favorite songs delivered in a way that only Faye Green can!

Michael Coppola began playing guitar at the age of eleven. His musical foundation, which began with instruction from guitarist Ritchie Lengel, was further developed through the combination of classical fingerstyle studies and lessons with jazz artist Sal Salvador. He pursued his education at the Boston Conservatory of Music and soon after in Austria, at Die Hochschule Fuer Music, where he studied serial and atonal composition with Guenther Kahowitz. He followed up this instruction later, in Manhattan, with jazz master Walter Bishop Jr. His career spans decades and includes the inventions of both the 8 and 9 string guitars and recordings and accolades with both.

Currently, Michael performs at national guitar shows, NAMM, festivals, and concerts as well as smaller venues in New England. A few performances of note include: the Montreal Jazz Festival 2011, the Blue Note NYC 2012, the Iridium ( as a guest of Les Paul), and the National Guitar Museum, playing in duos with Gene Bertoncini, Jack Wilkins, Howard Alden, Stephen Bennett and other top guitarists in the country.

Music: The Coppola Jazz Guitar Duo performs Fri., Mar. 10

Jazz guitarists—and father and daughter—Michael and Michaela Coppola play Best Video Performance Space on Friday, Mar. 10. The show starts at 8 PM and the cover is $5.

After playing for 20 years, Michael Coppola, on a mission to solve the age old problem of executing jazz piano voicings on guitar, created a tuning for an 8 stringed instrument. This new type of guitar, with inner high end strings was the predecessor to the 9 string “hydra”, which became Coppola’s instrument for life. Michael Coppola has become one of a small handful of guitarists who have pushed the boundaries of the instrument, and the only to come up with this unique tuning.

Reviews of his CDs have been filled with descriptions such as unique, amazing, mind-boggling, magical, inventive and so much more. He has played at major guitar shows and concerts throughout the world including the  Montreal Jazz Festival, The Chet Atkins Festival, Namm, and many others, as well as some of the country’s top jazz clubs such as the Blue Note, The Iridium, Knickerbocker and many others.Mainly a solo artist, Coppola has alsoperformed or recorded with many of today’s top musicians, especially guitarists such as Gene Bertoncini, Jack Wilkins, Tony Purrone, Howard Alden, Stephen Bennett, Tommy Emmanuel, and Joscho Stephan.

Michael was a regular guest on Monday nights at the Iridium, invited by Les Paul himself. Lately, he has been performing with his 17 year old prodigy daughter Michaela, who is the CT high school Allstate jazz guitarist as well as the national honor ensemble jazz guitarist (#1 in the country).

Michael Coppola’s album Return Of The Hydra was chosen as a top ten pick for the year 2002, in Coda Magazine. His original composition “Movin”, released on the New Impressions album, was a winner in the 2002 John Lennon Song Competition. Reviews and articles about his work have appeared in numerous magazines including: Guitar Player, Just Jazz Guitar, Jazztimes, 20th Century Guitar, and Fingerstyle Guitar.

At age thirteen, Michaela Coppola became the youngest performing member of the Fairfield County Jazz Guild, where she developed her Jazz improvisational skills on the stage of local Jazz Club, Two Boots, in Bridgeport. During this time, she mainly played with college music majors and made some guest appearances with local professional Jazz artists. For the past three years, Michaela has been performing semi-professionally with her father, renowned jazz guitarist Michael Coppola, at many events such as the Montreal Jazz Festival in Montreal, Canada; The Chet Atkins Festival in Nashville, Tennessee and Connecticut’s Levitt Pavilion and other venues. She is a regular performing artist in the house band of the monthly Jazz Jam at Café Nine in New Haven, Connecticut as well as other local Connecticut clubs and restaurants.
