Music: Fun times with The Red Hots, Pat Stone Fri., May 25

The always fun Danbury-based Red Hots return to Best Video Performance Space Friday, May 25. American singer-songwriter Pat Stone (of Pat Stone & The Dirty Boots) opens with a solo set. The show starts at 8 PM and the cover is $5.

The Danbury-based (quartet), The Red Hots are two beautiful and talented ladies who bring life back to many classic jazz standards, old blues tunes and feisty originals with their blend of unique vocals, ukelele/guitar and harmonica, mixed with driving organic percussion. Members are Cynthia Preston (guitar, vocals) Petra Herceg (ukelele, vocals) Russ Preston (guitar, vocals, harmonica), Jay Margolin (percussion).

The Red Hots band began in October of 2012 in Danbury, CT — the brainchild and collaborative effort of Petra Herceg and Cynthia Preston, two beautiful and talented ladies who grew up playing music and had both performed professionally in the past. The band began re-imagining and re-doing classic, timeless pieces of music that were beginning to be lost to the ages, particularly old blues, jazz, ragtime and rockabilly.

Mixing the retro-stylized covers in with their own eclectic sound, The Red Hots began gigging at local places around town, experimenting with their sound and musical elements. After dabbling with various instruments and line-ups, the band has solidified their image as a tight-knit trio, expanding their live performances all the way to NYC festivals and private parties at the Jersey shore, as well as becoming a well-known act in their hometown. Their adaptability has become their coup de grace, able to play anything from low key acoustic shows in wine bars and lounges, to swingin’ and jivin’ upbeat sets in bars and rock venues.

The sound of Pat Stone & The Dirty Boots is one that is constantly evolving depending on the context of the performance. This quartet is capable of being a traditional all-acoustic band complete with glimmering mandolin, woody upright bass, tasteful percussion, and dynamic vocals complete with rich harmonies. On the flip side of the coin, the band is a rock n’ roll four piece featuring dual electric guitars, bold drum fills, aggressive, catchy vocal lines and a contagious energy. Songwriter Pat Stone plays solo for this show.

Chris Cappello

Chris Cappello sometimes writes songs about his his town, his friends, and the people who have let him down. Mostly, though, he writes about himself. Sometimes he plays in a band and sometimes he plays on his own. He was born in New Haven and doesn’t see himself leaving any time soon. He likes guitars, vinyl records, basement shows and breakfast cereals. He imbues his life with more meaning than it deserves. He’s sorry if he wrote about you.

After fronting a variety of bands, Fairfield County-based musician Pat Stone has amassed a diverse repertoire of original songs. What’s interesting is that these songs, originally written for a full band and a variety of genres from hard rock to ska punk, have all been converted to an acoustic singer/songwriter format. The Artist Formerly Known As Pat Stone is essentially a culmination of “greatest hits” from this artist’s history of song writing. Stone is set to release his first full length album for his current project, Samsara, in March.
