Music and film: Redscroll Records hosts cult film with live score by Nephew Sun., Apr. 9

As part of their 10th Anniversary Celebration, Wallingford-based Redscroll Records hosts a screening of the cult film “Deadbeat At Dawn” at Best Video Performance Space on Sunday,. Apr. 9. Nephew will provide a live soundtrack to the movie. The event starts at 7 PM and the cover is $7.

From Redscroll Records via Wiki: “‘Deadbeat at Dawn’ is a low-budget film written and directed by Jim Van Bebber and starring Paul Harper, Megan Murphy, and Marc Pitman. The film depicts a street gang leader setting out for revenge against a rival street gang. (From the Wiki).”

Suggested age of over 17 for this one please. The movie contains a good amount of violence and brief nudity. The original soundtrack is also one we think can be improved and to that end… this event!

Who is Nephew? Matt Grem – short answer. He’s been in bands and stuff that don’t really relate to this project. He loves horror movies and their soundtracks. John Carpenter’s nephew (#AltFact). If you dig really hard into our Instagram you can find some short clips of him playing in clandestine locations.

Joining Matt/Nephew for this venture will be Sean Martin. Sean is generally known for having been in Hatebreed with more recent stints in Jet Fueled Horses and Twitching Tongues among other appearances. He’ll be joining in on for those key moments begging for a guitar riff.

Music: Redscroll Records presents Hex Inverter, Nothing Israel, Dirt Devil in early 7 PM show Wed., Apr. 6

April_6_Flyer_WebRedscroll Records, the cool underground record shop in Wallingford, presents a triple bill on Wednesday, Apr. 6. Hex Inverter headlines, with Nothing Israel and Dirt Devil opening. This show starts at 7 PM rather than our usual 8 PM start. Yep, really at 7 PM!

Philadelphia five-piece Hex Inverter may be intent on maintaining a low profile but their highly evolved take on meditative psych rock and its sub genres is bound to garner them more than just a modicum of success–boasting current members of Pennsylvania sibling act Empty Flowers (Mick Mullin-guitars, Christian McKenna-vocals/moog, and Andre Gallifi-drums/percussion), even their best attempt at anonymity (the only hint at their identity is each member’s capitalized three letter initial) is trumped by a stellar reputation that proceeds itself.

The band’s eight track eponymous debut (CD/DD and vinyl versions were released in February via Translation Loss and Redscroll Records respectively) is one of a growing number of albums by similar minded artists—take NYC’s Psychic Ills, or Manchester’s Dead Sea Apes for example—that abandons faddish trends of witchcraft props and gratuitous odes to Satanic/Occult lore and runs for the hills to an even darker and more intellectualized oasis – naturally, this ‘authenticity of sound’ has a longer artistic shelf life than the widening pool of over-reverbed, under-talented pseudo existential, post-whatever fodder that crowds most of the net these days.

Hex Inverter is definitely on to something here; part cinematic score, part dark folk—it’s less about labels and more about balancing the extremes of tension and release through manipulation of mood and atmosphere. This end effect is effortless for the greatest storytellers and this band’s brew of heady shoegaze and bleak retro-futurism tells its own story that’s no less vital to the modern ear than classic Floydian prog or The Lamb Dies Down On Broadway era Genesis was (at the time) to the countless followers and fans craving their next hit of inspiration.

Dirt Devil, out of western Massachusetts, play a hypnotic form of dreamy fuzz pop with hints of the shoegaze sound pioneered by My Bloody Valentine.

Nothing Israel offers up solo soundscapes.
